Often referred to as the 'Snow Monkey Park', the Jigokudani Monkey Park was established in 1964, as a conservation area for the protection of a local troop of monkeys. Though wild, that troop chooses to move through the park each day, offering visitors a unique chance to observe these truly curious creatures up close. The monkey park sits within the wider region of Yamanouchi, an area that boasts multiple hot spring towns, multiple ski resorts, and the expansive Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. Known best for the cold and snow of winter, the park and surrounding region entices visitors all-year-round with spring, summer, and autumn each offering a unique experience at the park, the towns below or mountains above.

Where is the Jigokudani Monkey Park?
The Jigokudani Monkey Park (Snow Monkey Park) is located 35 km northeast of central Nagano City. It is an easy day trip from the city, but the surrounding area offers plenty of reasons to stay overnight.

5 / THE ESSENTIAL YUDANAKA AND SHIBU ONSEN EXPERIENCE / all year round

Located just minutes down the mountain from the monkey park, the historic sister towns of Yudanaka Onsen and Shibu Onsen offer the quintessential old-world Japanese hot spring experience. Life moves slower here, and 1,300 years of traditional bathing culture are fiercely preserved.
☀️ Daytime: Retro Street Strolls (Open to All Visitors)

Whether you are staying overnight or just passing through after visiting the monkeys, wandering the nostalgic, cobblestone streets is a sensory delight for all ages.
- Savor Onsen Street Snacks: Stop by traditional storefronts to sample freshly baked senbei (rice crackers) and steaming manju (sweet bean buns filled with red bean paste).
- Taste the Volcanic Waters: Try an onsen tamago, an egg boiled directly in the natural, bubbling thermal water, or sip from public hot water fountains.
- Retro Games & Drinks: Explore vintage shooting galleries, or duck into welcoming local bars known for their friendly atmospheres, cold beers, and warm sake.
🌙 Overnight: The Shibu Onsen Ryokan Experience (Exclusive Privileges)

To unlock the deepest secrets of the valley's thermal culture, you must book an overnight stay. The towns are packed with family-run ryokan (traditional guesthouses) and cozy minshuku (inns) that range from rustic and wild to modern and indulgent.
When you check into a guesthouse strictly within the borders of Shibu Onsen, you unlock exclusive cultural traditions:
- The Nine Healing Baths Challenge (Kyu-to-meguri): Shibu Onsen is home to nine historic public bathhouses. While locked to day-trippers, overnight Shibu guests are handed a master key upon check-in. You can stroll from bath to bath in your provided yukata (cotton kimono) and geta (wooden sandals), experiencing nine completely different volcanic water sources, each possessing its own unique medicinal properties.
- Authentic Kaiseki Dining: Most ryokan include a stunning kaiseki multi-course dinner. Rather than a fixed menu, kaiseki is a seasonal culinary canvas designed by the head chef using hyper-local mountain ingredients. Because it relies entirely on the local harvest, the menu shifts completely between seasons.
Ready to plan your day trip or lock in an overnight stay? See our detailed 'see 'Where to Stay When Visiting the Park'.

- Nagano's Longest Season: Because of its high altitude, Shiga’s winter season starts earlier and lasts much longer than neighboring fields. Select ski areas open as early as late November and stay open until late April or even into May, offering the absolute best spring skiing in Nagano.
- Proximity: This world-class powder is located within incredibly easy reach of the valley's traditional hot spring villages—Yudanaka, Shibu, and Kanbayashi.
Exploring Nearby Kita-Shiga Kogen

Lying within a comfortable 30-minute drive of Yudanaka Station, you will find the standalone alpine resorts of Kita-Shiga Kogen. While these fields are not physically connected to Shiga Kogen and are notably smaller, they make fantastic winter day trips:

While winter blankets this region in deep powder, the green season transforms Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, the fourth largest national park in Japan, into a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and eco-tourists. Spanning an expansive alpine landscape, it serves as the lush mountain backdrop to the Jigokudani Monkey Park, which sits nestled right along its western border.

- The Peaks: The park's dramatic topography features multiple mountain peaks rising well over 2,000 meters above sea level, creating an ecologically vital environment where thousands of rare animal, plant, and insect species coexist.
Seasonal Best: June to November

- When to Visit: While heavy snow blankets the landscape from mid-November to April, the absolute best time for hiking or exploring the park by car is from June to early November once the winter snowpack has fully melted.
- Beating the Summer Heat: Hiking through these high-altitude wetlands is a beloved way to escape Japan's humid summer. Due to the elevation, temperatures up in the highlands are regularly 5°C to 10°C cooler than the valleys below.
- Green Season Lift Access: The highlands feature multiple gondolas and chairlifts that continue operating right through the summer and autumn months, opening up panoramic mountain viewpoints and scenic trail networks for day hikers.
9 / GREEN SEASON ROPEWAYS & GONDOLAS IN SHIGA KOGEN / (almost) all year round

10 / DRIVE THE SHIGA-KUSATSU KOGEN ROUTE / May to November

The Shiga Kusastu Kogen Route, Japan's highest state road, is a spectacularly scenic alpine highway that winds from the base of the monkey park, climbs straight through the heart of Shiga Kogen and Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, and descends into Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan’s most legendary hot spring destinations.
The Drive & Logistics
- The Window: Due to extreme alpine snow accumulation in winter, this well-maintained mountain pass is only open between May and mid-to-late November.
- The Route: It serves as a breathtaking, panoramic road trip and the most direct summer path connecting Nagano and Gunma prefectures over the volcanic ridges.
🌋 Mt. Shirane Safety Precautions

- Active Volcano: The highway cuts directly across the plateau of Mt. Shirane, a highly active volcano. Your personal safety should always be your top priority.
- Precautionary Closures: Because of its volcanic nature, sections of the road can close suddenly as a safety precaution if increased thermal activity or toxic gas emission is detected.
- Stay Informed: Prior to driving the route, always check real-time safety warnings and volcanic advisories provided by the following website at the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The Destination: Kusatsu Onsen

Driving this route connects you directly to a historic hot spring town adored by Japanese travelers for centuries.
- The Yubatake: The town is instantly recognizable by its iconic Yubatake (hot water field)—a massive wooden cooling chute system that sits right in the bustling town square.
- The Springs: Fed by the intensely acidic, mineral-rich volcanic waters of Mt. Shirane, the steaming springs cascade down the chutes directly into the public baths and surrounding traditional guesthouses.
