Photoblog: Jigokudani Monkey Park in December 2019
  • Photoblog: Jigokudani Monkey Park in December 2019

Winter has arrived at the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park! As temperatures continue to drop and the first flutters of snow powder the valley, here’s our final photoblog for 2019!

The start of December saw early snow fall in the park. As always, the first snow of the season seems to take the monkeys by surprise who quickly sought refuge in the hot spring.

This year’s babies really seem to feel the cold. Having been born during April through to June, they’ve only ever known the warm to hot temperatures of spring and summer. Even autumn, though cooling, is a time of abundant food and warm daytime adventures. But now, with the winter sun never reaching the bottom of the valley, the little ones squeak and shiver, in complaint about the cold.

As we come to the end of 2019, staff park continue to work hard to repair the damage left by the typhoon which struck in October. The park is not yet back to its best and with the peak season approaching, they are working tirelessly to restore full access. The park appreciates the patience and understanding of visitors as they finish those repairs with a warm invitation to visit. The park will be open to the public everyday through winter.

Winter will soon take hold and cover the valley in snow. With that, visitor numbers will increase and guests from all over the world come to witness the unique sight of Nagano’s hot-spring bathing monkeys. For visitors on their way to the park this winter, make sure you are well prepared for the conditions including very cold temperatures, snow and ice.

Our popular 1-Day Snow Monkeys, Zenko-ji Temple & Sake Tour will operate every day through winter, with pickup available in Hakuba from December 18th onwards. This tour combines a morning visit to Nagano’s near-1400 year old temple with sake tasting and lunch in Nagano City, before heading to the Snow Monkey Park in the afternoon.

From December 22nd onward, our 1-Day Snow Monkeys & Snow Fun in Shiga Kogen Tour kick-offs. This winter-only tour is always popular. Combining a morning visit to the park, followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant and afternoon snow fun activities in nearby Shiga Kogen, this tour lives up to its name and offers great fun in the winter wonderland of Nagano!

This year we are also happy to offer our 1-Day Snow Monkeys & Snowmobiling in Shiga Kogen Tour. Already proving popular is now sold-out in December but available from January to March 2020.
