It is spring in the Jigokudani area and with the new greens of nature, new life is born to the monkeys. The first baby was reported to be born a week ago, towards the end of April.
Usually the first babies are born around the 20th of April. This year however, has been extraordinarily cold so the pregnant monkeys adjusted their internal delivery clock. The first baby this year was born to Tokkuri 92-00, a monkey that comes from a strong family within the monkey pack. Being member of a powerful family means that she is usually somewhere on the foreground, so very easily found in the park. If you see Tokkuri and her child, please keep your distance from the newborn and its momma as they are now it their most vulnerable due to delivery.
If you’re in the Jigokudani Park and you want to go searching for babies the trick is not to look for babies, but to look for mothers. The small creatures are solidly attached to their mom’s belly for the first months of life. So you’re more likely to get lucky if you search for the bigger monkeys instead of the small ones. If you visit the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park in the months of May, June, July there is a fat chance that you’ll see more and more babies popping up as time passes.
