Description

takayama

Your journey commences at 9:30 AM at Takayama Station, where your guide will warmly welcome you, eager to start a day filled with cultural discovery and natural beauty in the Northern Japan Alps. Begin your exploration through Japan’s rich cultural heritage with a visit to Hida no Sato.

This remarkable open-air museum, set just outside the bustling center of Takayama, showcases a collection of over 30 traditional buildings that have been relocated from various parts of the Hida region. Each building, from thatched and shingled houses to ancient shrines and rustic sheds, is a National Important Folk Cultural Asset, allowing visitors a unique glimpse into the architectural styles and enduring traditions of the Hida-Takayama area.

As you wander through Hida no Sato, the architecture of the village invites a deeper understanding of the region’s heritage. The village hosts a remarkable array of traditional houses, each carefully preserved to maintain their historical integrity. From the robust, snow-resistant gassho-zukuri farmhouses with their steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfalls, to the simpler, elegant homes used by craftsmen and merchants, every structure tells a story of survival and adaptation in the challenging Hida climate. Inside these homes, you can see irori (traditional hearths) still used to heat the buildings, and tools and utensils are displayed exactly as they would have been used in daily life, offering a window into the past lifestyles of the Hida region’s inhabitants.

Following your visit to Hida no Sato, the tour takes you to the enchanting Squirrel Forest. This delightful sanctuary, located close to the natural forests surrounding Takayama, offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature. As you enter the park, you are welcomed by the playful antics of friendly squirrels roaming freely within their enclosure. The area is thoughtfully designed with logs and open spaces to encourage close interaction between visitors and these charming creatures, providing a serene yet engaging setting. It’s a perfect place for families and wildlife enthusiasts to enjoy a moment of joy and relaxation, making unforgettable memories in a distinctively serene environment.

Kamikochi

In the afternoon, our tour transitions to the peaceful realms of Kamikochi, a jewel nestled in the heart of the Japanese Alps. This extension of our nature journey brings us deeper into the alpine beauty, where the lush foliage, the soothing sounds of the Azusa River, and towering mountain peaks create a perfect blend of tranquility and wild beauty. Here, Kamikochi invites you to delve into its serene landscapes, with each step unveiling the exquisite craftsmanship of nature.

Our journey in Kamikochi starts at the Taisho Pond and moves along the serene Azusa River, the lifeblood of Kamikochi, celebrated for its crystal-clear flow. The riverside offers a sequence of picturesque spots, ideal for embracing the peaceful ambiance or capturing moments of serene beauty with your camera. Advancing further, we arrive at the famed Kappa Bridge, a notable architectural highlight that provides breathtaking views over the mountainous horizon. This landmark is not only a visual treat but also steeped in local folklore, adding a layer of enchantment to its already picturesque setting.

Following our guided walk, you will enjoy about an hour and a half of leisure time to wander through Kamikochi at your leisure. This time is ideal for delving deeper into the hidden wonders of this alpine paradise. During this free interval, you may choose to unwind beside the tranquil Azusa River, photograph the breathtaking vistas, or explore the serene Myojin Pond. Kamikochi offers you a chance to immerse yourself in its pristine beauty. As the day draws to a close and the valley is aglow with the golden light of sunset, your journey back will be filled with lasting impressions of the Japanese Alps’ serene and unspoiled magnificence.

Finally, after a day filled with exploration and discovery, you will reconvene with your guide at approximately 17:00 to wrap up the tour and commence the scenic drive back to Takayama. This return journey, lasting about an hour, offers a relaxing transition as you reflect on the memorable experiences of the day. You can expect to arrive back in Takayama around 18:00, carrying with you the lasting impressions of the Japanese Alps’ serene splendor.
