Description

This tour begins near Gion-Shijo Station at 10:00 A.M., where your guide will meet you before beginning a walk through Kyoto’s historic entertainment and cultural districts.

The morning portion of the experience focuses on the traditional arts and entertainment culture that developed in Kyoto over hundreds of years. Walking through the preserved streets of Gion and neighboring districts, your guide will explain the history of geiko and maiko culture, traditional tea houses, Kyoto aesthetics, and the role these districts continue to play today.

As you move through the area, you will pass through famous streets and neighborhoods including Pontocho, one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric alleyways lined with traditional restaurants, hidden bars, and seasonal riverside dining along the Kamogawa. Depending on the route and seasonal conditions, the tour may also include areas such as Gion Kobu, Gion Higashi, and Miyagawacho.

Along the route you may also see landmarks such as Yasaka Shrine, Yasui Konpiragu Shrine, Minamiza Theatre, and the famous Yasaka Pagoda. While this is not a temple-focused tour, guests will still experience many of the areas and scenery that define Kyoto for first-time visitors.

Following the guided walk, guests will have free time to enjoy lunch and explore central Kyoto at their own pace. Your guide can provide recommendations depending on your interests, ranging from casual Kyoto specialties and matcha cafés to more refined dining options. In the afternoon, the experience continues inside a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse for a private cultural experience centered around traditional Japanese arts and hospitality.

Hosted within an intimate tatami-mat setting, guests will be welcomed by experienced practitioners of traditional Japanese arts, dressed in formal kimono. During the tea ceremony experience, guests will learn about the history, philosophy, and etiquette of Japanese tea culture while observing the careful preparation of matcha using traditional utensils and seasonal sweets. Guests will also have the opportunity to prepare tea themselves and experience the refined atmosphere and hospitality that define Japanese tea ceremony.

The experience can also include a live shamisen performance by a trained musician performing one of Japan’s most iconic traditional instruments. Deeply connected to kabuki theater, traditional dance, and geiko culture, shamisen music has been an important part of Japanese performing arts for centuries. Guests may also have the opportunity to briefly interact with the instrument and learn basic shamisen techniques themselves.

This tour involves several hours of walking through central Kyoto. We recommend comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

During summer months, Kyoto can become extremely hot and humid. Morning scheduling and relaxed pacing are designed to help guests enjoy the experience more comfortably.

There will be free time during the experience for guests to relax, explore, and enjoy Kyoto at their own pace. Guests are welcome to ask the guide for food recommendations, sightseeing suggestions, or assistance throughout the day.
