For those seeking a perfect blend of spiritual grandeur and untamed nature, this journey through the foothills of the Rokko Mountains offers a refreshing escape from the urban sprawl. We begin at Nakayamadera, a magnificent temple complex steeped in legend and famed for its stunning five-story blue pagoda and deep-rooted traditions of safe childbirth and family protection. This initial stop provides a nice moment of reflection before we transition to the mountain landscapes of the Japanese countryside.

The adventure continues as we step back in time to trek along the Takedao Abandoned Railway, a scenic trail where rusted tracks and old brick tunnels wind through the dramatic Mukogawa Gorge. You will navigate dark tunnels and cross skeletal iron bridges that offer breathtaking views of the rushing river and seasonal foliage below. We then arrive at the secluded Takedao Onsen, where you can soak away your feet fatigue in healing thermal waters tucked away in a quiet mountain valley. Before the day fades, make a final stop at the hillside Satsukiyama Park, where the grand torii gate frames a sweeping panoramic view of Ikeda City and the twinkling lights of the Osaka skyline beyond

Join us for a full-day walking tour that blends unique temples, abandoned railways, and the great outdoors. Please be aware we will be walking up to 20,000 steps and that will have to climb up and down stairs.

Description

Our first stop is Nakayamadera, a sprawling and vibrant temple complex in northern Osaka that is legendary for its association with safe childbirth and family health. We will explore its unique architectural highlights, including a rare and stunning five-story "Blue Pagoda" that stands out against the lush green hillside. As we wander the elevated grounds, you will enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding city while learning about the temple’s founding by Prince Shotoku over 1,400 years ago.

After departing the temple, we make our way to Namaze Station to refuel before our trek begins. You will have time to enjoy a local lunch or pick up supplies at a nearby shop, as this serves as our final gateway into the gorge ahead.

From the station, we embark on the highlight of our hike: the Takedao Abandoned Railway, where we will navigate dark tunnels and cross rusted iron bridges that span the dramatic Mukogawa Gorge. This flat yet thrilling trail follows a decommissioned track reclaimed by nature, offering spectacular views of the rushing river and seasonal cliffs.

The ascent toward the Daikokuten Torii leads you up winding, forest-fringed paths that offer glimpses of the valley below as you reach the striking viewpoint. From there, a short stroll brings you to the reconstructed Ikeda Castle, where you can wander through traditional landscaped gardens and climb the ramparts for a commanding look over the historic district.
