Description

This tour will start at Ichinoseki Station at 10:00 A.M., where your guide will meet you in front of the Three Wise Ōtsuki statue located just outside of West Exit.

We will then head off to our tour's location via local train.

Our first stop for the day is Yugen Cave, a mysterious limestone cave said to be the oldest in all of Japan. This quaint location offers visitors a chance to view geological formations from up to 350 million years ago.

The cave itself is said to have been on the seafloor at a depth of around 50 meters with areas turning almost completely vertical due to movement of the earth's crust. Inside the cave you can see and feel the earth's vast history. There are fossils as well as interesting patterns of stalactites for you to explore as you make your way through the damp caverns.

The cave was discovered in the Showa year 55, or 1980, and has been a topic of scientific interest ever since. It contains earthen layers from the Middle Paleozoic Era and is considered one of Japan's premiere fossil sites. Along with the cave itself, the location also has a permanent exhibition of the site map, fossils, as well as documentation of its history as a geological site. Your guide will offer some insights and translations here.

We will take our time walking through the steep and narrow caves, experiencing the wonder first-hand.

We will then walk our way toward our next destination for a short break, some souvenir shopping, and then on to the boat ride.

The Geibikei Gorge is a famous attraction in Iwate known especially for its gorgeous autumn foliage. This scenic boat tour takes you up and down the river by traditional pole rowing – a one of a kind tour in Japan!

Your tour guide will provide translations and insights as your trusted boat-rower takes you up stream. You will learn about the area, the various rock formations, and details about the flora and fauna. You can even buy some feed to give to the fish and ducks that follow the boats.

We will then have a short 20 minute break at the half-way point of Daigeibi-Gan, or the Great Rock of Geibi. Here you will be able to walk around to stretch your legs, view some magnificent views of the rock formations, and even purchase an ema (a small wooden plaque at Shinto shrines in Japan known for writing down wishes or prayers).

The highlight of this short break is you can also purchase undama or a lucky stone. There are different rocks for different themes – health, love, money, etc – that you purchase and toss across the river into a small opening in the rocky cliffside. It is said that if you make it in, your wish according to the rock will come true. Your guide can offer assistance with translations of what each rock represents.

We will then return back to the boat for the second half of the trip down stream.

Depending on the day, the staff rowing the boat will sometimes sing traditional Japanese songs written about the Geibikei Gorge. Sit, enjoy, and let yourself bask in the beauty of nature and song. This part is especially breathtaking during peak autumn foliage time, but any time of year offers breathtaking views and a sense of calm.

We’ll wrap up our day by venturing back to Ichinoseki Station via local train, where your guide will say their goodbyes. The tour will conclude around 3:40 PM. Due to the nature of the tour, specifically using local trains, it is advised that guests who wish to continue their travels onward schedule their departures later than 4:30 PM.

TOUR MEETUP POINT 

ICHINOSEKI STATION @ 10:00 A.M.

The meetup point is in from of the Three Wise Ōtsuki statue (大槻三賢人像), located  just outside of the west exit at Ichinoseki Station.

If you are arriving via JR lines, follow the signs to the west exit and find the statue outside straight ahead.

If you are arriving via shinkansen, please look for signs directing you towards the west exit. First, you will go through the ticket gates that exit the shinkansen area. BE ADVISED: a paper ticket will come out again at this gate because you will have one more ticket gate to go through at the west exit, so be sure to grab it before proceeding onward. Walk through the corridor and head down a flight of stairs to an area that has outdoor, local train platforms to your left. Continue following the signs for the west exit. It is a relatively small area and you can see the statue outside through the glass doors straight ahead from the gates.

For those coming from outside the station, you will want to head toward the west exit. Entering in the east exit is possible but you must buy a platform ticket (入場券 - nyūjōken) for 150 yen in order to walk through to the west exit..

You may wait near the statue until the tour begins at 10:00 A.M. Be sure to look for the guide holding a SNOW MONKEY RESORTS tour sign.

• Please note that this tour uses public transport, not a private vehicle. Due to this tour using public transport, timings are subject to some change if traffic is poor, train delays, or the day of travel is particularly busy. 
• This tour involves several hours of walking outdoors. We recommend that you wear shoes and clothes which are easy to walk in. Please check the weather forecast before you head to the meetup point and prepare an umbrella or raincoat if necessary.
• The cave interior is quite narrow, low-ceiling, and steep at times. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or troubles with dark, confined spaces.
• Be advised the boat ride often does not have chairs and sitting on the floor is required which can be unsuitable for guests with hip or leg injuries or weakness.
• It is recommended that you do not bring any luggage or large bags with you on the tour. It is advised that you check if your hotel can store your luggage for you, send it ahead to your next destination, or store your luggage at or near Ichinoseki Station.
• There will be free time during the tour for guests to purchase food and souvenirs to remember their trip.
