1-Day Tour from Nagano: Post Towns, Bessho Onsen, and Cliffside Temples

Defined by its mountains, ancient pilgrimage routes, and preserved heritage, Central Japan is the literal heartland of this beautiful country and a road less traveled by many international visitors. This engaging one-day tour takes you to Shakuson-ji, a dramatic temple hall built directly into a sheer rock cliff that houses the famous Nunobiki Kannon statue, before exploring the perfectly preserved Edo-period post town of Unno Juku on the old Hokkoku Kaido trade road.

You’ll conclude your journey in Bessho Onsen, Nagano's oldest hot spring town, home to a rare north-facing sanctuary and Japan's only wooden octagonal pagoda (a registered National Treasure). Led by a locally based guide and including private transport throughout the day, this tour captures the spiritual and cultural essence of Nagano's original namesake, Shinshu.

Description

The tour starts at Nagano Station, where your guide will greet you at 08:30 and board the tour vehicle to head south along the Chikuma River valley toward the mountains of Tomi City in Nagano Prefecture.

Morning: The Cliffside Sanctuary of Shakuson-ji Temple

Your first destination is Shakuson-ji Temple, famous for its stunning cliffside architecture, sweeping views, and the story of the Nunobiki Kannon, tucked deep into a lush forest gorge.

• The Hike: Reaching this cliffside sanctuary involves a scenic, 30-minute hike up an atmospheric, moss-lined stone path protected by many Jizo statue guardians while passing small waterfalls and unique rock formations.
• The Legend: At the top, you will discover the temple’s famous Kannon-do hall, built directly into a shallow cave on a sheer rock wall. Here, your guide will share the famous local legend of the greedy old woman who chased a cow who stole some cloth and became the saint that is enshrined in the Nunobiki Kannon.
• The View: From the cliffside viewing platform, you will enjoy a sweeping view across the Chikuma River valley toward Mount Asama.

Note: The hike up to Shakuson-ji is quite steep at times. An abundance of time is allotted to this part of the tour so that breaks can be taken on the way up. Anyone of reasonable fitness should be able to complete navigate the terrain, but there are quite steep steps at times, so please let us know if you have any concerns about this section of the tour.

Midday: Exploring the Old Silk Road

After descending the trail, a short 20-minute drive brings us to Unno Juku, an exceptionally well-preserved post town on the ancient Hokkoku Kaido highway. Originally established in the Edo period as a resting stop for samurai and traveling lords, Unno Juku later evolved into a bustling silkworm-farming center.

• Architecture: As you walk down the wide, stone-lined street flanked by a gentle water canal, your guide will point out unique architectural features, such as udatsu (ornamental firewalls) and kiyatsu (raised roof vents), that helped protect the historic district and give life to its trade.
• Lunch Break: You will have free time here to enjoy lunch at a venue at Unno-juku, after which you can explore on your own until free time ends.

Afternoon: Nagano's Oldest Hot Springs

In the afternoon, we head to Bessho Onsen, the oldest hot spring resort in Nagano Prefecture, often referred to as the "Kamakura of Shinshu."

• Spiritual Heritage: We begin with a guided walk to Kitamuki Kannon, a rare temple that faces north toward Zenkoji in Nagano City. According to local tradition, visiting both temples grants complete spiritual blessings.
• National Treasure: From there, we stroll to Anrakuji Temple to view its renowned Octagonal Three-Story Pagoda, which is the only surviving wooden structure of its kind in Japan and an official National Treasure dating back to the late 13th century.
• Relaxation: Before concluding our day, you will have free time to explore the peaceful temple town, shop for local souvenirs, or roll up your trousers and soak your feet in one of Bessho Onsen’s public, mineral-rich ashiyu (footbaths).

Note: Depending on the amount of free time at Bessho Onsen, you may have the opportunity to (at your own expense) bathe at one of many different onsen that allow for day-bathing. Towels are not included in the tour rate, but you should be able to rent at the onsen itself.

At 16:00, we board our vehicle for the comfortable drive back to Nagano Station, where the tour concludes.

The meetup point is inside the station, in front of the Information Board directly across from the Shinkansen ticket gates. Be sure to look for the guide wearing a SNOW MONKEY RESORTS tour tag and ensure you are there prior to the meetup time as the tour will need to depart by 09:20.

• There is a significant amount of walking required on this tour. The hike to Shakuson-ji (Nunobiki Kannon) involves a steep, 30-minute uphill climb through a forest ravine over uneven, moss-covered stone steps. Please ensure you wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes.
• This tour is not wheelchair accessible and may not be suitable for mobility-impaired travelers due to the steep trail at Shakuson-ji and the historic stone staircases at the temples in Bessho Onsen. Should you have any concerns about your ability to join the tour, please contact us to discuss prior to booking.
• This tour uses private vehicle transport. Tours can be conducted by microbus or a larger coach depending on the season and the size of the group.
• A large portion of this tour is conducted outdoors. Please wear clothing suitable for the season and changing mountain weather. If you plan to use the free public ashiyu (footbaths) during your free time in Bessho Onsen, we highly recommend bringing a small hand towel to dry your feet.
• This tour is scheduled to conclude at Nagano Station by 16:50. However, due to traffic or weather conditions, we cannot guarantee the exact end time. For guests booking Shinkansen or onward train tickets to travel to Tokyo or other destinations after the tour, we strongly recommend booking services for 17:45 or later.
• Lunch is not included in the tour price. Guests will have ample free time during the stop at Unno Juku to purchase their own lunch locally.
• Infants (0-5) are free of charge. We cannot guarantee that a seat on the tour transport will be available for infants, and they may be required to sit in the lap of an adult if the vehicle is fully booked.
