Description

This tour begins at Nagoya Station at 9:00 A.M., where your guide will meet you in front of the Silver Clock near the Shinkansen gates. After a brief introduction to the day's journey, we'll travel together to one of Japan's oldest and most revered places of worship: Atsuta Jingu.

Founded nearly two thousand years ago, Atsuta Jingu has long been regarded as one of Japan's most sacred Shinto shrines.

While many visitors come to admire its tranquil cedar-lined pathways and beautiful architecture, the shrine's true significance lies in its connection to the legendary Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the sacred sword that symbolizes the authority of the Japanese Imperial family.

As you explore the expansive shrine grounds, your guide will introduce the myths surrounding the storm god Susanoo, the heroic prince Yamato Takeru, and the legends that transformed this shrine into one of the country's most important spiritual locations. 

Following lunch near the shrine, we'll make our way to the historic town of Arimatsu, located along the former Tokaido Road that once connected Kyoto and Edo (modern Tokyo).

Established in the early seventeenth century, Arimatsu transformed from a small roadside settlement into Japan's most famous center of Shibori, an intricate indigo-dyeing technique often described as Japanese tie-dye.

Unlike modern tie-dye, however, Arimatsu Shibori is an extraordinarily refined textile art requiring hundreds, or even thousands, of tiny hand-tied bindings to create breathtaking geometric and organic patterns.

The highlight of your afternoon is a hands-on Shibori workshop, where you'll learn the fundamentals of this centuries-old craft directly from a local artisan.

The artisan will demonstrate a few different tying techniques for you to try. After selecting your design and mastering the tying techniques, you'll dye the fabric yourself, creating a truly one of a kind souvenir. You will be able to take home your fabric with you the very same day!

You'll also get the chance to visit the Shibori Museum and watch experienced craftspeople demonstrate techniques that have been passed from generation to generation. Some of these methods are practiced by only a handful of artisans today, making this a rare opportunity to witness an important part of Japan's living artistic traditions.

Before returning to Nagoya, you'll have time to browse local boutiques featuring handmade textiles, speak with artisans, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of one of Japan's finest preserved historic towns.

We’ll wrap up our day by returning to Nagoya Station, where your guide will say their goodbyes. The tour will conclude around 4:00 PM. Feel free to ask the guide for dinner recommendations or instructions back to your hotel.

The meetup point is at the base of the SILVER clock tower outside of the Shinkansen gates. 

If you are arriving via Shinkansen, the clock tower should be located directly in front of you as you exit the gate.

If you are arriving via a JR line, please look for signs directing you towards the Taiko-Dori Gate. The silver clock is located inside the station just before the Taiko-Dori exit.

For those coming from outside the station, you will most likely be entering through the Sakura-Dori gate (the side with the gold clock). In this case, please walk straight through the station towards the Taiko-Dori Gate. The silver clock is located inside the station just before the Taiko-Dori exit.

You may wait nearby there until the tour begins at 9:00 A.M. Be sure to look for the guide holding a SNOW MONKEY RESORTS tour sign. We highly recommend arriving early as Nagoya station can be quite crowded.

Other Information

• This tour involves several hours of walking outdoors. We recommend that you wear shoes and clothes which are easy to walk in. Please check the weather forecast before you head to the meetup point and prepare an umbrella or raincoat if necessary.
• There is a chance that you might spill dye on your clothing during the shibori workshop experience. So we recommend wearing something that you are ok getting dirty.

• In the summer, temperature highs are around 35 °C (95 °F) and above with extreme humidity. We recommend wearing something light and airy while minding sunburn and heatstroke. A parasol is highly encouraged.
• Winter temperatures in Nagoya average between 0℃-10℃ (32°F-50°F). Please wear warm clothing and footwear appropriate for cold conditions.
• There will be free time along the way for guests to purchase souvenirs to remember their trip.
