Head high into Japan’s tallest mountain range via the legendary Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route and onto the ‘Roof of Japan’. With pickup points in both Nagano City and Hakuba, this engaging tour to the immense Snow Walls of Tateyama and one of Japan’s most dramatic landscapes using mountain transports to and from the Nagano-side of the mountain to ascend to almost 2500 metres above sea level. Led by an English-speaking guide, you will be accompanied on every leg of your journey to the Roof of Japan and back down again – the perfect way to experience one of Japan’s more remote and stunning landscapes.

The tour begins with pick-up at Nagano Station at 08:30 followed by Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal at 09:40. Your guide will greet you and the other guests and quickly have you board the bus to begin your journey to the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. Arriving at Ogizawa Station around 10:45 your guide will give you time to prepare for your ascent before boarding the Kanden Tunnel trolley bus at 11:00 – the first of a variety of mountain transports you will utilize to reach the summit.

First stop is the Kurobe Dam. Constructed between 1956 and 1963, this immense structure require the labor of up to 10 million people and is Japan`s highest dam. A source of national pride and emblematic of man`s attempts to conquer nature, your guide will give you time to enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, before starting the next leg of your journey toward the top.


The Tateyama Ropeway is a highlight of your adventure upwards. Spanning 1700 meters, you will be transported upward to the final stop of Daikanbo, before taking the final trolley bus to the final station, Murodo. At 2450 meters, this is Japan`s highest station – an isolated outpost in an inhospitable, dramatic landscape.


Vast amounts of snow fall on the landscape each winter making it inaccessible until spring brings warming temperatures and the chance to carve a route through the ice. Rising up to 20 meters above, the stunning snow corridor is one of Japan’s most iconic sights dwarfing people and tours buses alike! Your guide will allow you between 1.5-2 hours to stroll the area (depending on the pace of your), including time to explore the museum and surrounding area.


Between 15:00 and 15:30 your guide will collect you and begin the journey back down, descending back to Ogizawa where the tour bus will be waiting. Boarding the bus and returning to first to the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal by 18:30 and concluding at Nagano Station at 19:30*.

The meetup point is inside the station, in front of the Information Board directly across from the Shinkansen ticket gates. Be sure to look for the guide wearing a SNOW MONKEY RESORTS tour tag. Please ensure you are there prior to the meetup time as the tour will need to depart by 08:35.

08:30 Meet-up with your guide at the Information Board across from the Shinkansen exit gates and take a seat in the tour bus (your guide will be waiting for you at the meeting point from 08:20). From Nagano the bus first heads to Hakuba to collect guests at the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal at 09:40. From there you head toward the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route.
10:45 Arrival at Ogizawa Station, gateway to the Tateyama Alpen Route and prepare to ascend the mountain.
11:00 Board the trolley bus and begin your ascent toward the summit using a number of mountain vehicles including trolley bus, cable car and Tateyama Ropeway - which at 1700 meters long, is the longest ropeway of its kind.
13:00 Around this time you will reach the summit station of Murodo and the spectacular landscape of Mt Tateyama and its famous Snow Walls. Your guide will get you oriented, set a meetup time and place, and then set you free to explore for up to 2 hours.
15:00-15:30 Meet-up with your guide and start making your way back down via trolley bus, ropeway, cable car, and trolley bus.
17:00-17:30 Arrive at Ogizawa Station. Your driver and vehicle will be waiting for you to begin the journey back to Hakuba and Nagano.
18:00-18:30 Drop-off at the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal.
19:00-19:30 Arrival at JR Nagano Station where the tour concludes.

Other Information

  • Please wear suitable shoes for walking through snow and cold conditions (with the possibility of temperatures below 0°C)
  • Please bring sunglasses as the snow in combination with sunlight can produce intense glare.
  • This tour does not include lunch. Snacks can be purchased at different mountain stations with different restaurants to choose from at the summit.
  • In case of extreme weather conditions, routes to the snow corridor might close. In such a case, the tour will be cancelled with full refund.
  • The itinerary is based on the traffic conditions being optimal. We will adjust the schedule according to traffic conditions and pace of the group on the day of the tour.
  • Infants (0-5) are free of charge.
  • If there are no guests joining for Hakuba, the tour will run approximately 1 hour faster with an estimated end time in Nagano of 18:30. Guests wishing to book onward train tickets should do so for services after 19:30. If the tour returns early, it should be possible to change your train time at the ticket office.
  • The tour application deadline is 1 day before the tour date at 17:00.

The start and finish of the tour are arranged according to the Shinkansen timetable. You can book the following services on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line when joining this tour at Nagano Station:

Unfortunately, no. Due to time constraints and to keep the tour running as quickly as possible, we are unable to provide alternative pick-up or drop-off points in Hakuba. All guests coming from Hakuba will be collected from and returned to the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal.

What should I wear on this tour?
As noted above, this tour transports you to around 2500 metres above sea level where weather conditions are notably different, typically much cooler – please refer to the information above for average temperatures through the year. No matter when you are travelling, please ensure you are dressed for alpine conditions including good quality shoes or boots, a jacket, hat, and sunglasses. Though the temperature will be cooler, the sun can be very strong. If you burn easily please also bring sunscreen and ensure you have sunglasses as the glare of any remaining snow can be intense If you want to walk through the snow fields, please ensure you wear boots.
Is this tour wheelchair accessible or appropriate for mobility-impaired guests?
Unfortunately due to the nature of this tour, it is not wheelchair accessible and may not be suitable for mobility-impaired travels. Should this be of concern, contact us at prior to booking to discuss options.
Is lunch included on this tour?
No. This tour does not include lunch however there will be opportunities to purchase food and drinks during the tour. If you prefer to, please also feel free to bring snacks and drinks with you.
This tour is more expensive than some of your other tours. Why is that?
The price of this tour is a reflection of the distance covered, activities including ticket for the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, use of our own transport to and from Ogizawa Station, a guide for the day and our choice to cap the number of guests. This tour has a maximum of 14 participants. We do this to ensure the best possible experience for our guests so while the price is little higher than some of our tours, we’re confident you’ll enjoy every aspect!
