Yudanaka & Shibu Onsen

Located near the base of Shiga Kogen, both Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen are famous of their abundance of 'onsens' (natural hot springs). Discovered more than one thousand years ago, the water is said to hold powerful healing properties and specific medicinal benefits. As a result, Japanese have been coming to the towns for centuries - including injured samurai during warring periods - to recuperate and relax in the ancient waters. Yudanaka Station is the nearest to the Snow Monkey Park and Shiga Kogen ski fields. As such, it is the gateway to the region and a great place to base yourself. The towns are home to numerous 'ryokan' (traditional guesthouses) which are often family-run and a glimpse of traditional, rural Japan. Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen are a great destination for visitors wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the cities and enjoy the ambiance of a traditional hot spring town.
