Obuse is a small Edo Period (1603-1868) town steeped in history and tradition. Located in the heart of the countryside of Nagano Prefecture, Obuse is populated by quaint shops, gardens, temples, local delicacies and sake, and home to the Hokusai Museum. Katsushika Hokusai is Japan’s most celebrated artist, most famous for his ’36 Views of Mount Fuji’ series and breaking wave image. Hokusai spent some of his final years painting in Obuse, now home to the Hokusai Museum and his final grand painting – a stunning phoenix on the ceiling of Ganshoin Temple. Famous for its chestnuts, any visit to Obuse is a delicious day out given the town's numerous confectioneries, restaurants, and cafes rounded-out by sake breweries, miso factories, and beautiful craft stores.Obuse is also your gateway to the beauty and tranquillity of the Matsukawa Valley. A place of farmlands and orchards, ancient cherry blossom trees and autumn foliage, secret onsens and the deep snow of Yamaboku Wild Snow Park – home to the 14km Takochi backcountry ski course – Matsukawa Valley is a hidden gem which is waiting to be discovered.
