Nagano City

Easily accessible from Tokyo and other destinations on the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line, Nagano City is the largest metropolitan area in Nagano Prefecture. With its origins in the 6th and 7th centuries, Nagano's history is entwined with that of its most famous cultural site, Zenko-ji Temple. First founded in 642, the temple is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist sites in Japan and the epicenter from which the city grew. From those origins the city's history is one of warlords and ninjas, as Nagano was dragged into the upheaval of long wars and territorial battles. Though much more peaceful now, the city retains its historic character in the streets, merchant buildings, many temples, and festivals that make Nagano one of the most popular places to live for Japanese. Nagano is a convenient transport hub for visitors en route to other popular destinations in the region. Whether you are visiting nearby historic towns including Matsumoto, Suzaka, or Obuse, headed to the mountainous surrounds of Togakushi, or the ski resorts of Shiga Kogen, Hakuba, and Nozawa Onsen, Nagano City is the perfect location to base yourself and explore the best of central Japan.
