The Tenjin Matsuri is one of Japan's top three festivals, a vibrant 1,000-year-old tradition held annually on July 24 and 25 to honor Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship. Centered around the Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, the celebration reaches its climax on the second day with a massive land procession of 3,000 people in Heian-period costumes, followed by a spectacular river procession. As dusk falls, approximately 100 illuminated boats, some carrying portable shrines (mikoshi) and others hosting traditional noh or bunraku performances, glide along the Okawa River. The festival culminates in a breathtaking display of roughly 5,000 "dedication fireworks" that light up the night sky, creating a stunning reflection against the bonfire-lit fleet below.
