Weather in July
July days in Tokyo are when it starts to warm up after rainy season. The average temperature high and lows range from around 30°C (86°F) to a low of 22°C (72°F) and it will get hotter as the month goes on. The beginning of July may still have a little bit of the June rainy season weather, so some rainy and cool days for some reprieve. The temperature really starts climbing from mid-July onwards. July signals the beginning of Summer here in Japan and this is when schools get out so the festivals and events are in full swing for the students to enjoy. Don't forget to bring a picnic sheet, some snacks, and drinks to fully enjoy the fireworks shows, as most of them are near parks with seating area. Also be aware that a lot of these shows are very popular so show up ahead of time if you want to secure a good location. The Sumidagawa fireworks festival is known to get around 1 million attendees!

The big holiday in July is called 'Tanabata' also known as 'Star Festival'. This holiday celebrates the day that the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi are allowed to meet. These deities are said to be separated by the Milky Way and are only able to meet one another on the seventh day of the seventh month. This holiday is usually celebrated by writing wishes on pieces of paper and attaching them to bamboo stalks, so you may see this decoration in many places that you visit. If there is a writing station, feel free to write your own wish and hang it up!

Lovers of honey and alcohol rejoice! The summer marks the return of beer gardens all over the country. It also brings back the Honey Festival and Sake Festival here in Tokyo. The honey festival isn't just about the delicious gooey product of honey bees; it also offers honey-based items such as mead, candles, bath salts and bath bombs. There is also the Sake Festival where you can try sake from all over the country, the UNU Farmer's Market which is held every weekend in Aoyama, and the Oedo beer festival which runs twice - once at the end of July running into August and then again, the week after that starting on the 7th.

Flea markets are a great place to pick up souvenirs of you time here in Japan and Tokyo has lots of them! Flea markets are usually on the weekends, and the bigger ones are held almost every weekend. July is one of the best times of the year to visit Tokyo and experience all it and the surrounding regions have to offer. The city has many events, festivals, and gardens where you can enjoy a nice bowl of matcha and sweets. Be sure not to overdo it, make sure to take breaks, and drink plenty of water!
