Weather in June

June marks the beginning of the rainy season (tsuyu) across much of Nagoya and the wider Tokai region. The landscape becomes intensely green as frequent rainfall nourishes forests, rice fields, and mountain valleys, while humidity rises noticeably throughout the month. Although June is often wetter and cloudier than May, it also brings beautiful scenery (especially in the forests and mountains) and fewer crowds.
Daytime highs in June in Nagoya typically range from around 26°C to 30°C (79°F – 86°F), while nighttime temperatures are usually mild and humid, hovering between 19°C and 23°C (66°F – 73°F). The first half of June can still feature occasional sunny stretches, but prolonged rainy periods become increasingly common as the month progresses. Humidity levels are significantly higher than in spring, and the combination of warmth and moisture can make the city feel quite muggy, especially on still days after rainfall.

In coastal areas like Ise, conditions are similarly warm and humid, though ocean breezes can sometimes provide slight relief. Daytime temperatures are generally comparable to Nagoya, with highs often between 25°C and 29°C (77°F – 84°F). Low clouds or mist occasionally drift across the coastline and surrounding hills, creating atmospheric scenery around the shrines and forests of the area, but offer limited visibility into the distance.

By contrast, alpine regions such as Kamikochi remain much cooler and fresher. June is one of the best months to visit the mountain valley, with snowmelt feeding clear rivers and dense greenery covering the landscape. Daytime highs typically range from 15°C to 22°C (59°F – 72°F), while nighttime temperatures often fall to around 8°C to 13°C (46°F – 55°F). Rain showers are common, but long periods of heavy rain are less frequent than in lower elevations. Morning fog and clouds around the peaks are especially common during the rainy season, adding dramatic scenery to the mountains.

In the Kiso Valley, including the historic Nakasendo Trail towns, June brings warm temperatures and increasingly wet conditions. Daytime highs usually range from 22°C to 27°C (72°F – 81°F), with cooler mornings and evenings in the more elevated sections of the valley. The forests along the trail become exceptionally lush during this period. However, trails can become muddy and slippery after rainfall, particularly in forested areas.
Visitors to the Tokai region in June should pack lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for humid conditions, along with reliable rain gear such as an umbrella or waterproof jacket. Waterproof shoes or hiking footwear are especially useful for mountain areas and the Nakasendo Trail. Those heading to Kamikochi or other alpine destinations should also bring a light sweater or jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.
