This guide highlights what to expect from the weather, must-see seasonal attractions, and the best foods to enjoy during your visit.

Weather in February

February still feels like winter in Nagoya and the surrounding regions. Snow can still be found covering the mountains surrounding the city.

Daytime highs in Nagoya city in February average around 7°C to 10°C (45°F - 50°F), with the nighttime temperatures dropping to around 1°C to 5°C (34°F - 40°F). The number of cloudy days increases as the month goes on, as does the chance of precipitation.

The weather is even colder in the mountainous regions surrounding Nagoya including Takayama, Shirakawago, Mt. Gozaisho, and the many ski slopes in Gifu. In these areas, daily highs range from 0.5°C to 3°C (33°F - 38°F) with chances of snowfall at roughly 30%.

We recommend anyone visiting Nagoya and the surrounding region in February to pack warm layers of clothing including winter jackets, hats, and gloves. If you are planning to spend the day outdoors in the mountains or visit Shirakawago, we also recommend winter boots with good treads. Additionally, the outdoor air throughout the winter is very dry, so we recommend bringing (our purchasing) plenty of lotions and moisturizers.

One of Japan’s great fire festivals and designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, this impressive festival involves the burning of two large torches, called “Suzumi,” each approximately 5 meters tall. The festival's origins are unclear due to the loss of historical records, but it is said to date back approximately 1,200 years.

Once the suzumi are set aflame, 25-year-old men (an age thought to be of misfortune in Japan), are selected from opposing sides of a riverbank, and compete to retrieve sacred objects from the fire to offer them before the shrine. It is believed that this ritual divines the year's weather, harvest, and crop yields based on the outcome.
