Known as the “goldilocks season”, the day time is exceptionally pleasant, making it a perfect time to enjoy a walk in nature, whether it be the Kamikochi trails in Central Japan or up in Tateyama for its massive Snow Wall that towers over even buses. Flower festivals occur across the nation, so you can enjoy from Osaka with its roses to Sapporo’s lilacs. May is the best time to visit to immerse yourself in Japan’s natural beauty.

As the cherry blossoms scatter, Japan turns into a lush sea of green known as shinryoku (fresh green)  season. Forests, temples or shrine grounds, gardens, and hiking trails are where it's most vivid. The season is perfect for an outdoor adventure to the Kiso Valley or an alpine excursion in Kamikochi, right before summer and humidity raises the temperature.

Golden Week

Golden Week, occurring during late April to early May, is Japan’s longest national holiday period. It consists of four public holidays, namely Shōwa Day, Constitution Day, Greenery Day, and Children’s Day. While not necessarily subsequent, the Japanese government tends to time these holidays to coincide with weekends and by allowing “observing” days throughout the week should a holiday fall on a weekend. With this being one of the busiest for domestic travel, it is highly recommended to book way in advance accommodations or transportation during the period of Golden Week. The Golden Week schedule for 2026 is as follows:

April 29Shōwa Day
May 3Constitution Memorial Day
May 4Greenery Day
May 5Children’s Day
May 6Constitution Memorial Day (observed)
