December is a wonderful time to experience Hokkaido's winter scenery, with snow-covered landscapes, festive illuminations, and the beginning of the ski season. The month also brings a more festive atmosphere, with Christmas decorations, and seasonal activities.
In this guide we'll go over all you need to know about traveling in Hokkaido in December.
Weather in December

December marks the beginning of full winter in Hokkaido, with temperatures dropping well below freezing in many areas and snowfall becoming increasingly frequent.
As Japan's northernmost prefecture, Hokkaido experiences some of the country's coldest winter weather, though average temperatures can still vary significantly depending on location. In the City of Sapporo, located in the heart of Hokkaido, average daytime highs range between 0–3°C, while evening temperatures often dip to -4 to -7°C.
Further inland, Asahikawa experiences even colder conditions, with daytime highs averaging between -2 to1°C and overnight lows dropping to -8 to -12°C. Whereas, at the southern end of Hokkaido, average daytime highs in Hakodate are slightly milder, ranging between 2–5°C, though evening lows can still fall to -3 to -6°C.
Wherever you are in Hokkaido, December is firmly winter, so warm clothing, insulated footwear, and plenty of layers are essential.
Average Weather Overview:
| Location | Average High | Average Low | Rainfall / Snow |
| Sapporo (Central) | 0–3°C | -4–-1°C | Moderate |
| Otaru (West Coast) | 0–3°C | °C-3–0°C | Moderate |
| Asahikawa (Interior) | -3–0°C | -10–-6°CC | Heavy |
| Hakodate (South) | 2–5°C | -2–1°C | Light–Moderate |
December is also an exciting time for winter sports enthusiasts, as ski resorts across the prefecture begin operating in earnest. Resorts such as Niseko and Rusutsu typically open in late November or early December, with conditions improving as the month progresses. December is also a wonderful time to experience Hokkaido's winter scenery, illuminated city streets, and seasonal hot springs.
We recommend bringing a heavy winter coat, thermal layers, gloves, scarves, and waterproof shoes or boots with good grip, as icy sidewalks and snowy roads are common.
