Located around 45 minutes from central Nagano City, Yamanouchi is a region of farmlands and orchards, mountains and forests. Most famously, the Jigokudani Monkey Park and Shiga Kogen – Japan’s largest ski resort – are located within Yamanouchi, along with the resorts of Kita-Shiga and many other attractions. Yamanouchi is blessed with an abundant supply of natural thermal water and as such, has numerous guesthouses and hotels spread through the area, most of which have their own in-house ‘onsen’ (hot springs).
Accommodation ranges from budget to luxury and caters for all tastes and needs. In the hot spring villages of Yudanaka Onsen, Shibu Onsen and Kanbayashi you will find many ‘ryokan’ (traditional guesthouses) while the nearby resorts of Shiga Kogen and Kita-Shiga have plenty of ski lodges and larger hotels catering to the winter crowds.

Accommodation in the Yamanouchi area is concentrated in four main areas - Kanabayashi Onsen, Yudanaka Onsen, Shibu Onsen and the ski resorts and mountainous areas of Shiga Kogen and Kita-Shiga Kogen. See below for details.
