Tokyo: Shinagawa Station Area

Located at the southern end of the Yamanote Line – the convenient loop line that circles through Tokyo – Shinagawa Station is a major transport hub and entertaining area in its own right. Most conveniently, Shinagawa is only 20-minutes by train from Haneda Airport and a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen.

The area around the station is largely a commercial and residential area and doesn’t have much in terms of sight-seeing. It does however offer easy access to the popular event spaces of Tokyo Big Sight and Tokyo Teleport, and offers a good range of restaurants and some excellent hotels including The Strings by InterContinental and Conrad Tokyo, along with a good range of mid-range and budget options.

You can also visit some nearby attractions such as Shinagawa Aquarium, as well as shrines and temples in the area such as Sengaku-ji Temple rich in Samurai history or Shinagawa Shrine which is home to a mini Mount Fuji replica that you can climb! You can even enjoy a short sightseeing cruise from Shinagawa Pier which is a great way to see the Tokyo skyline! However, if you’re looking for more things to do in Tokyo, check out our 25 Things to Do in Tokyo page and our Best Tours in Tokyo which will give you a great overview of all Tokyo has to offer as well as the tours we provide!

The station has both modern and historical significance, as it was one of the original stations to be included as part of Japan’s first ever railway line which opened in 1872. Today, it is mostly used by busy commuters trying to get to work from all across Tokyo. Shinagawa Station offers access to many major train lines such as the JR Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, and Shinkansen bullet train services which can connect you to cities such as Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya. You can easily travel to major parts of Tokyo using the JR Yamanote Line. For example, you can arrive in Shinjuku in 22 minutes and Shibuya in 15 minutes. You can even reach Tokyo using the JR Ueno Tokyo Line in 8 minutes and Ueno in 14 minutes.

If you need to be at Haneda Airport early or are arriving a little late and don’t fancy staying in and around the airport, the Shinagawa Station area is a good option. You’ll find a greater range of hotels – including high-end accommodation – and a good variety of restaurants or easy access into other areas of Tokyo for one last night of fun.
