Tokyo: Roppongi Station Area

The neighbourhood of Roppongi is not just popular with visitors to Tokyo but many foreign residents choose to live in the area due to its lifestyle, lively nightlife and dining options. Roppongi boasts some excellent hotels including the Grand Hyatt, the Ritz Carlton and Hotel Okura with a range of mid-range to budget options also available. If you want to enjoy the renowned nightlife of the area without worrying about missing the last train, or if you simply want to take advantage of one of the areas high-end hotels, then Roppongi might be a good option.

It’s worth noting however that Roppongi Station isn’t on the Yamanote Line – a loop line that is very convenient for exploring Tokyo – nor is it a shinkansen station, meaning that in terms of getting to and around Tokyo it isn’t that convenient. Staying in the area is more about what’s on offer in terms of dining and entertainment than convenience.

To reach Roppongi, you will need to use either the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line or the Toei Oedo Line. The Hibiya Line connects Roppongi to many key areas in Tokyo such as Ebisu, Nakameguro and Ueno. Tou can reach Ueno in 27 minutes. The Toei Oedo Line operates in a circular route through Central Tokyo like the Yamanote Line, and connects Roppongi to the popular neighbourhoods of Shinjuku and Tsukiji. For example, you can reach Shinjuku in only 9 minutes. So despite Roppongi not being as convenient as other areas, it is still well connected.

The area of Roppongi has many great amenities and attractions to keep visitors occupied. For example, the plush Roppongi Hills Complex is a great place to spend your time. The complex is home to the Mori Art Museum is a spectacular contemporary art museum. It features special exhibitions on both Japanaese and International Artists. The complex also has the ’Tokyo City View’ where visitors can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of Tokyo from the observation deck. From here you can see Tokyo Tower. It is especially wonderful to watch the sunset. Many may know Roppongi Hills for the giant sculpture of a Spider that towers over visitors! Roppongi Hills also has its very own garden, ’Mori Garden’. It is a beautiful landscaped garden perfect for a relaxing walk to escape the bustling city. At Christmas time, Roppongi Hills is home to stunning Winter illuminations and even a small Christmas market, so if you’re visiting during the Winter/Christmas season, make sure to check it out!

Roppongi is also home to the equally impressive complex of Tokyo Midtown. This is a multi level complex home to an abundance of shops, dining options, art galleries and even the Suntory Museum of Art which boasts an impressive private collection of Japanese artefacts and art. You can easily spend a few hours here. Nearby Tokyo Midtown is the fantastic art gallery and museum ’21 21 Design Sight’. For any art lovers, we highly recommend checking out here not only for the art but also for the impressive design architecture of the building.
