Easily accessible from Tokyo, Hakone is one of Japan’s most famous hot spring areas. Hakone-Yumoto Station is the gateway to the area Hakone and boasts a large range of accommodation and dining options.


Staying in the area is a good option for visitors wanting easy access to the station and the main shopping and dining street of Hakone. There are numerous hotels and ‘ryokan’ (traditional guesthouses) in the area, catering to all tastes and budgets. A short distance from the station, Tonosawa is a riverside area with multiple large hotels and traditional guesthouses offering a sense of seclusion away from the main area of town. Readily accessible from Tokyo, Hakone is well-established as a stop on the tourist trail and is home to a range of wonderful attractions and activities. Always popular, Hakone is at its busiest during autumn, when the changing leaves turn the landscape a stunning mix of red, yellow, amber and gold.



Hakone can be approached from multiple directions but from Tokyo, it is easiest to do so using the Odakyu Railway running from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Using the limited express service takes approximately 85 minutes / JPY2330. Alternatively, a highway bus service runs between Shinjuku Station and Ashinoko (Ashino Lake) taking around 2 hours (depending on traffic) / JPY2000
