Matsumoto: Asama Onsen Area

Asama Onsen is located around 6KM to the north of central Matsumoto City and is home to a grouping of hot spring hotels and guesthouses. Asama Onsen is one of Nagano’s most abundant hot spring areas, blessed with seven major water sources flowing out of the ground around 50°C. Bathing in the water of Asama is said to aid recovery from muscle and joint pain, stiff shoulders, paralysis, bruises, neuralgia and other conditions. Accommodation ranges from high-end hotels to smaller, mid-range to budget guesthouses. As a traditional onsen town, many hotels and guesthouses include Japanese-style rooms with on-floor ‘futon’-bedding and service traditional ‘kaiseki’ (multi-course) menus and in-house hot springs. Some hotels and guesthouses also offer Western-style rooms with the best options also offering private onsen.
