PHOTOBLOG: JIGOKUDANI MONKEY PARK IN JULY 2019
  • PHOTOBLOG: JIGOKUDANI MONKEY PARK IN JULY 2019

It’s a little later than usual – let’s face it, a whole lot later than usual! – but here, finally, is our July photoblog for the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. Summer has arrived at the park and in the increasing heat and humidity, the monkeys are staying cool by retreating to the shade of overhanging trees and shubs or relaxing nearby the river which runs through the park.

Given the heat of summer, you’re unlikely to see many monkeys in the hot spring at this time of year. But that shouldn’t suggest that it isn’t worth visiting the park! The monkeys come to the park all year round and this time of year, they are very reliable coming to the park every day and (usually) in big numbers.

With (human) visitation to the park very low in the summer, those who do make the journey typically have a great experience with lots of monkeys but few people competing for space and photographs.

As our series of articles published last year highlights, there are lots of good reasons to visit the park in summer including:

This year’s baby monkeys – mostly born from late-April until the end of June – are maturing quickly and a little more coordinated than in their first few months. Keen to explore the park and their wider world, they are now very active with their mums a little more willing to let them explore for themselves. Adorable to watch and ridiculously photographable, a visit to the park is worth if for no other reason than to see these bigtime cuties!

In the warmth of summer the monkeys seem content with their usual roster of monkey activities to purse: wrestling, grooming and dozing their days away.

And if none of those hold their interest, the monkeys can always just position themselves in a good spot to watch the rest of the troop and the daily antics that make the park such a fun and entertaining place to visit – whether you be monkey or human!
