Wakayama Castle is located in the center of Wakayama City, the capital of Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It sits atop Mount Torafusu and is surrounded by a sprawling park and moats, about a 10-to-15-minute bus ride or walk from either Wakayama Station or Wakayamashi Station.
A Brief History
Wakayama Castle was built in 1585 by Toyotomi Hidenaga on the orders of his brother, the powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1619, the castle was handed over to Tokugawa Yorinobu, a son of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, making it a critical regional stronghold for the Kishu Tokugawa clan, one of the three elite branches of the ruling shogunate. Although many of its original structures were destroyed by a fire in 1846 and later by Allied bombing raids during World War II, the iconic white main keep was meticulously reconstructed in 1958 using concrete to restore the city's historic skyline.
