Where is Tomogashima Island?
Tomogashima is a small cluster of islands located in the Kitan Strait of Japan, positioned between the Kii Peninsula of Wakayama Prefecture and Awaji Island. Administratively, the islands are part of Wakayama City and sit just off the southwestern coast of Osaka Bay. Visitors typically access them by taking a 20-minute ferry ride from Kada Port, which is located at the northwestern tip of Wakayama's mainland.
A Brief History
During the Meiji period, the Japanese military heavily fortified Tomogashima to serve as a strategic coastal defense outpost protecting Osaka Bay from foreign naval invasions. Five red-brick artillery batteries, ammunition bunkers, and a lighthouse were constructed across the islands, though they were ultimately abandoned without ever seeing active combat during World War II. Following the war, the islands were integrated into the Setonaikai National Park and left completely uninhabited, allowing nature to slowly reclaim the ruins and create the unique atmosphere seen today.
