Bessho Onsen boasts a large range of hot spring hotels and guesthouses along with public baths, enticing visitors to stay and enjoy one of Central Japan's most famous 'onsen' towns.
A former important religious centre, Bessho Onsen boasts some of Nagano's most significant temples including Anraku-ji and Zensan-ji along with the picturesque thatch-roofed temple of Joraku-ji.
Visitors heading to Bessho Onsen in January and February can enjoy the beauty and tradition of its Ice Lantern Dream Festival, as areas and monuments of Bessho Onsen are lit-up every evening from 16:30 to 21:00.
Bessho Onsen and the surrounding area of Ueda are just as well-known for its traditional food culture including some of Nagano's best wine and 'sake'.
As a stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, Ueda is easy to reach from Tokyo, Karuizawa and Nagano with local services also running to and from the city.
