Famous of its iconic castle, of the story of Matsumoto is that of legendary samurai class, that ruled the city and country for hundreds of years. The legacy of the samurai is evident throughout Matsumoto, manifest in the castle and historic streets. As such, Matsumoto is an ideal location to experience the samurai of which none is more famous than their use of ‘katakana’ (swords) in combat and ceremony. Located only 2-minutes walk from Matsumoto Castle Studio Kenyu offers samurai experiences every weekend (Saturdays and Sundays only) including use of samurai swords while dressed in traditional ‘yukata’ (light kimono).

You can choose your own bamboo sword perform your instructor will teach you sword technique and combat poses in an experience that is great fun for both children and adults. Available upon on request at all times of year, the activity takes 60 to 90-minutes and can be booked from 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and Sunday*. The booking office is open from 08:00 to 18:00.
