Ontake Ropeway

Ontake Ropeway

Mt. Ontake is the second-highest volcano and 14th highest mountain in Japan at an elevation of 3,067m. The Mt. Ontake ropeway station is located at the 5th climbing station of Mt. Ontake and the ropeway, which was once a ski gondola, will carry you up 2,333 metres to the 7th climbing station. The 15-minute ride travels over a former ski slope where beautiful alpine flowers now bloom.

Arriving at the top, there is an observation deck at an elevation of 2,150m offering stunning panoramic views of the Central Japanese Alps. On a clear day, you can even see Mt. Fuji. The walking paths feature small streams and waterfalls, and a small shrine for climbers and pilgrims of the Ontake faith to offer their prayers. Please note, Mount Ontake is an active volcano and your personal safety should be your first priority. The Japan Meteorological Agency provides real-time advice and warnings for the entire country.
