Join a Tour & Enjoy a Luxury Onsen Hotel

Hotel Senjukaku kanbayashi

Located within walking distance of the Jigokudani Monkey Park, Hotel Senjukaku is one of the region’s best traditional guesthouses. Renowned for its outstanding onsen – including indoor, outdoor and private baths – and ‘kaiseki’ (traditional multi-course) meal service, Hotel Senjukaku is a long-established favourite of the Japanese Royal Family.

Guests wanting to experience the indulgence of Senjukaku in combination with some of Nagano’s most popular attractions and experiences, can do so on our 2-Day Snow Monkeys, Luxury Ryokan, Zenko-ji Temple & Sake Tour.

The first day of the tour is led by a locally-based, English-speaking guide. Starting from Nagano Station you head to Nagano’s near-1400 year old Zenko-ji Temple. Established in 642, the temple houses the first known Buddhist statue to have been brought to Japan. Now hidden in the temple’s main hall, Zenko-ji is one of Japan’s oldest and most important temples.

You will be guided around the temple before enjoying free-time to explore for yourself. Exploration of the temple is followed by a guided ‘sake’ tasting experience and lunch at Monzen Terrace Enya. As one of Nagano’s most popular cities, the restaurant serves seasonal menu based on the region’s best local produce.

It’s then time to head to the monkeys! Arriving in Kanbayashi Onsen, your guide will accompany you along the forest trail into the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Home to the only troop of monkeys in the world known to naturally bathe in hot springs, there are no barriers separating you from the wild monkeys, making this a unique and memorable experience.

Your guide will introduce these truly curious creatures and provide you time to enjoy the unique experience of observing them in close proximity. Make sure to bring your camera as you’re going to need it!

Leaving the park it’s then time to check-in. You will be accompanied to the hotel, where your guide will say their goodbyes, leaving you to enjoy the afternoon and evening. Slipping into your yukata and wandering through the hotel affords an instant feeling of relaxation.

The indulgent onsen awaits, with the option of organising a private onsen (at an additional fee). Soaking in the onsen before you sit down to your kaiseki meal really is a pleasure, sure to be one of your best experiences in Japan.

The second day of this tour package is self-guided and yours to use as you please. The day begins with breakfast at the hotel – your choice of a Western or traditional Japanese menu – and no need to rush. Upon check-out, hotel staff will have you board the shuttle bus and transport you to nearby Yudanaka Station to continue your journey around Japan.
