Futami Okitama Shrine, nestled along the shores of the Ise Bay in Mie Prefecture, is most famous for the iconic Meoto Iwa, two sacred rocks joined by a massive rice straw rope (shimenawa).

Known as the “Wedded Rocks,” these stones symbolize the bond of marriage and are one of Japan’s most beloved spiritual landmarks. Steeped in mythology, purification rituals, and deep Shinto tradition, the shrine offers visitors stunning views and a chance to reflect on the connection between nature and the gods.

A Brief History of Futami Okitama Shrine

  • The area’s name, Futamiura, is said to date back to when Princess Yamatohime-no-mikoto disembarked here with the sacred mirror of Amaterasu (the sun goddess) on her journey to establish Ise Jingu.
  • The Meoto Iwa rocks have long served as a sacred boundary between the divine realm (Tokoyo no Kuni) and the human world.
  • The shrine honors Sarutahiko no Okami, the guiding deity of the gods, who led the celestial descendants to earth in Japan’s creation myths.
  • Originally a combined Buddhist-Shinto site, it became a dedicated Shinto shrine in 1876 during the Meiji Restoration’s shinbutsu bunri (separation of Buddhism and Shinto).
  • The current name, Futami Okitama Jinja, was adopted in 1910 following the merger of Okitama Shrine and Mikosan Shrine.

Futami Okitama Shrine was historically used as a location for misogi, or ritual purification, before pilgrims continued to Ise Jingu, the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan. Worshippers would wash in the ocean to purify body and spirit.

These days, the shrine has become a popular spot for witnessing the sunrise and moon rise between the rocks. As well as a place to pray for healthy marriage and romantic relationships as well as travel safety.

Meoto Iwa: The Husband and Wife Rocks

The shrine’s main feature, Meoto Iwa, consists of a larger rock (9m tall, 44m around) which is said to be male and a smaller rock (4m tall, 10m around), thought to be female, bound together by a 35-meter-long sacred shimenawa rope.

These rocks have long represented both a gateway to the sacred realm, as a sort of natural torii gate, and a physical embodiment of marital harmony. As such, they are a favorite pilgrimage spot for married couples and those praying for love and strong relationships.

Seasonal Highlights:

  • May–July: The sun rises in the middle of the two rocks.
  • November–February: A full moon appears between the rocks.

The Sacred Frogs

All around the shrine grounds are numerous frog statues, known as kaeru. In Japanese, kaeru means both "frog" and "return," making them symbols of safe returns and recovery of lost items.

In Japanese mythology, frogs are also connected to ancient beliefs that associate them with rain, fertility, and divine favor.
