Visit the Castle & Discover More on a Guided Tour

Located in the valley below the dramatic mountain peaks of the Northern Alps, Matsumoto Castle is unusual in that it does not itself sit atop an elevated position or ridge. Constructed in the valley in order to consolidate territory won during the upheaval of the Warring States Period, Matsumoto Castle was strategically positioned to defend important defensive and mercantile land, and looking back toward Japan’s highest mountain range.

As Nagano’s No.1 tour operator, we offer two group tours that combine a visit to the castle with visit to nearby the nearby rural area of Azumino or one of Japan’s most dramatic and spectacular alpine landscapes, Kamikochi.

Our 1-Day Matsumoto Castle & Local Food Experience Tour introduces guests to some of the culinary delights of the region with a morning visit to Daio Wasabi Farm. Grown in glistening streams of pristine water, the subtlety and versatility of real wasabi often surprises guests, while the beauty of the farm itself is well worth seeing.

It’s then time to try your hand at soba-making! You will be guided through kneading, rolling, and cutting your own buckwheat noodles before combining them with your freshly grated wasabi for a refreshing lunch.

After lunch you will head to Kametaya Brewery to sample yet another of Nagano’s most acclaimed products, ‘sake’. As Japan’s most famous drink, the world of sake is complex and steeped in history which is best experienced right where it’s produced, at one of the region’s oldest and most acclaimed breweries. Final stop of the tour is the castle. More than 400 years old and a registered National Treasure, Matsumoto Castle is one of Nagano’s most impressive cultural sites, known for its structural beauty set against a splendid mountain backdrop.

Our 1-Day Matsumoto Castle & Kamikochi Apline Valley Tour includes a morning visit to the castle before heading high into the Hida Mountains, also known as the North Japan Alps, and into spectacular Kamikochi.

Located around 1500 meters above sea level, Kamikochi is a stunning alpine valley sitting below mountain peaks rising to over 3000 meters in height. Known as the jewel of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, this is one of Japan’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Your guide will lead you on leisurely walk from Taisho Pond to Kappabashi, introducing you to the story, significance and beauty of Kamikochi as you stroll.

Make sure to bring your camera as you’re going to need it! As you walk, you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to stop and photograph the surrounding landscape – a place known for its beautiful mountain vistas and pristine nature.

Arriving at Kappabashi, you will then have around two hours to enjoy for yourself by wandering further along the trail or simply sitting down at a café or restaurant to take in your surroundings. A truly beautiful day-trip to Matsumoto and beyond.
