The nearly-1500 meter altitude road that connects Kanazawa with the thatched-roof UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-Go offers some of Japan's most scenic mountain views and best hiking trails. Planning a trip to Japan in the autumn? Be sure to check out the information below and don't miss out on one of the most naturally beautiful places in Japan.

What is the White Road?

The Hakusan Shirakawa-Go White Road is a 33.3 kilometer driving route through the mountains of the Hakusan National Park. Along the way, there are several spots offering views of great waterfalls, sweeping panoramic views of the valleys, as well as several hiking trails leading to scenic streams and hot spring pools.

The road is usually completely opened from the second week of July and closes around November 10th. It's most scenic time is in mid-to-late October, when the fall foliage along the route is at its best and brightest.

White Road Highlights

There are a number of places to stop along the way and get out and take pictures. One of the highlights is the Chugu Rest House which, if you're coming from the Kanazawa side, is a great start to the trip. You can eat local seasonal cuisine. The area also doubles-up as a free campsite area for those looking for a night beneath the stars!

Further along the route is another highlight, the Ubagataki waterfall. This scenic spot is right beside Oyadani no Yu, a free hot spring. The flowing water and rock formation are said to resemble the face of an old lady.

Near the end of the route is the Rennyo Tea House, named for a famous monk whose preaching started an uprising which turned the region into a "Peasants' Kingdom" for nearly a century. Their defeat and the installation of the Maeda Clan into Kanazawa Castle turned the city into what it is today. While here, you can pick up some souvenirs to commemorate your trip or enjoy some Japanese curry, made using local ingredients and known for its delicious pork cutlets.

How long does it take?

Driving the road takes about an hour and leads to Shirakawa-Go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its thatched roofs. Of course, if you're wanting to see absolutely everything on the route, it could take you a couple of days, so bring your camping gear! Most people take between two and four hours to drive with a couple of stops.

At Shirakawa-Go, expect to spend roughly the same amount of time to fully enjoy the village. If you're struggling on what to do, check out our Things to Do In Shirakawa-Go guide for more information! When you're finished, drive back through

What time is the toll gate open?

You are able to enter the driving course from 7:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. between June and August. From September, the route is open from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. The exits close at 6:00 P.M., so you will have to stay the night if you aren't out intime.

Are any areas of the route wheelchair accessible?

Yes! The observatory in the Sanpoiwa Parking Lot has no barriers, so wheelchair users can enjoy a view of the mountains.

Can I fly my drone over the park?

Unfortunately, drones are strictly prohibited along the route. Japan in general is very strict about drone use.

How can I see the sea of clouds?

It depends on the weather, but the best chance to see the sea of clouds is early in the morning from mid-September to early November. The area from the Sanpoiwa Parking Lot to the Shirakawa-Go Observatory Parking Lot offers the best place to see it.

Is there a spot to buy food or drinks along the road?

There are several spots along the road with vending machines but, unfortunately, only one restaurant on the road, the Rennyo Tea House. The shop is at the very end of the route on the Gifu side, though. Bring plenty of snacks and drinks for your visit!

Help - where are the toilets?!

Of the 13 parking lots along the route, 8 of them have toilets. You're never too far from a bathroom break in Japan!
