Aburahi Shrine (油日神社), in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, is a deeply revered Shinto shrine with a history spanning over 1,100 years. Once a spiritual home and training center for Koka warriors and ninjas, and now a popular filming location for historical dramas like Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, the shrine continues to captivate with its mythic origins, rare architecture, and cultural traditions.

A Brief History of Aburahi Shrine

  • Founded in the Heian period, with records dating back to 978
  • Dedicated to Aburai-dai-myojin, a war deity said to have descended from Mount Aburahi
  • During the Sengoku period, the shrine was the primary place of worship for the famed Koka ninja
  • Presently, companies involved in oil production (due to the word abura meaning oil in Japanese) continue to offer prayers here

The name “Aburahi” (油日), directly translating to “blazing sun,” comes from a legend that a god of war descended from a nearby mountain causing the mountain's peak to glow as brightly as the sun.

Aburahi Shrine served as a spiritual center for the Koka warriors (Koka-bushi), especially during the Warring States era of the 15th and 16th centuries. The shrine’s unique connection to martial warriors and regional politics made it the sōsha (chief shrine) of the entire Koka area. Thus, it became a meeting location for the Koka ninja families.

The shrine and the surrounding landscape appear much the same as it did 500 years ago. Several buildings on the shrine’s grounds are National Important Cultural Properties.
