Toyama Chiho Railway
Running from Dentestu Toyama Station – located within easy walking distance of Toyama Station – the Toyama Chiho Railway connects the city to two of the region’s most popular destinations – the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route via Tateyama Station and Unazuki Onsen and Kurobe Gorge via Unazuki Station.
As the primary mode of transport to and from those destinations, the line is by default popular with tourists however it is in itself worthwhile and enjoyable due to the scenic nature of the journey.

Toyama Chiho Railway Tateyama Line
Running from Dentetsu Toyama Station to Tateyama Station, the Toyama Chiho Railway Tateyama Line takes includes the following stops:
Dentetsu Toyama / Inarimachi / Shinjo-Tanaka / Higashi-Shinjo / Etchu-Ebara / Etchu-Sango / Etchu-Funahashi / Terada* / Chigozuka / Tazoe / Gohyakkoku / Enokimachi / Shitadan / Kamagauchi / Sawanakayama / Iwakuraji / Yokoe / Chigaki / Arimineguchi / Hongu / Tateyama
*Some services require passengers to transfer at Terada Station.
The journey takes between 65 to 75 minutes and costs JPY1230-1340 one-way (depending on which service you choose to use). We recommend using direct services bound for Tateyama, requiring no transfer.
Once at Tateyama Station, visitors can transfer directly onto the cable car headed to Bijodaira Station and onto Murodo Station and the summit of the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route.
Toyama Chiho Railway Main Line
Running from Dentetsu Toyama Station to Unazuki Onsen Station, the Toyama Chiho Railway Tateyama Line stops at numerous stations, including Terada Station, enroute to its final stop. In doing so, it provides access to Unazuki Onsen and from there, the Kurobe Gorge.
The journey takes around 100 minutes and costs JPY1800 one-way. Alternatively, for visitors heading to Unazuki Onsen and/or the Kurobe Gorge, we recommend taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Toyama Station to Kurobe-Unazuki Onsen Station and once there, walk to nearby Shin-Kurobe Station and use the Toyama Chiho Railway Main Line to complete the journey to Unazuki Station.
This option takes around 80 minutes and costs JPY3740 one-way.
Recommended Destinations Using the Toyama Chiho Railway
The Toyama Chiho Railway is in itself offers a pleasant and picturesque journey along a local line to a couple of Central Japan’s most enjoyable destinations.
Heralded as one of Japan’s best experiences, traversing the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route takes approximately 6 hours without allowing for time to stop and enjoy all of its stunning sights. In reality, undertaking a visit to the Alpine Route is therefore a full-day activity.
Visitors can start from Toyama via Tateyama Station or Nagano via Ogizawa Station, and choose to finish on the other side or return to their point of origin. A series of mountain transports including trolley buses, cable cars, a ropeway, and coaches transport visitors to and from Murodo Station – which at 2540 meters is the highest station in Japan.
Open from mid-April to mid-November, the Alpine Route is most famous for its immense snow walls which, at their peak, ascend 20 meters above the road below. In summer and autumn, some of Japan’s best mountain hiking is available in and round the summit of Mt Tate.
Situated at the entrance of the beautiful Kurobe Gorge, Unazuki Onsen is the largest hot spring town in Toyama Prefecture. Home to many guesthouses including traditional ‘ryokan’ and large hotels, the hot springs of Unazuki Onsen are known for the clarity of their water, known to aid healthy and vibrant skin.
From Unazuki Onsen, the Kurobe Gorge is easily accessible and quickly emerging as a popular destination for international visitors. Regarded as one of the three most beautiful gorges in Japan, Kurobe is best experienced riding the railway which covers a meandering and winding 20km span in approximately 80 minutes.
The open-air carriages allow visitors an intimate experience of the surrounding landscape with stations along the route allowing access to walk trails, onsen, restaurants and accommodation.
