Ogizawa Station

Ogizawa Station is one of two starting points for ascending the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route – the other being Tateyama Station on the Toyama-side of the mountain range. It is important to note, that unlike Tateyama Station, there is no train line running to and from Ogizawa Station. If you are coming by public transport, you will need to take a bus from Shinano-Omachi Station – the nearest station – or Nagano Station – the nearest major/shinkansen station. There are also bus services from some other major stations outside of the region.

From Ogizawa Station, visitors can take a series of mountain transports to reach Murodo Station and the summit of the Alpine Route. The initial transport from Ogizawa is an electric/tunnel bus to Kurobe Dam, from where you transfer to a cable car, ropeway and final electric/tunnel bus to reach Murodo. Ticket options are available to go as far as each station along the route, including descending on the Toyama-side to Tateyama Station or returning to Ogizawa Station.

Spread over three floors, the station is quite large and includes ticket windows, basic eateries and shops selling souvenirs and snacks.

For many visitors, accessing Ogizawa Station will be most easily undertaken from Nagano Station. As a stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line running from Tokyo to Kanazawa, Nagano is readily accessible from other major cities.

A local bus service also runs to Ogizawa to and from Shinano Omachi station – approximately 40 minutes. However, we recommend taking the bus from Nagano or joining a tour – see below for details.

Experience the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route

tateyama-kurobe-snow-walls

Heralded as one of Japan’s best experiences, traversing the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route takes approximately 6 hours without allowing for time to stop and enjoy all of its stunning sights. In reality, undertaking a visit to the Alpine Route is therefore a full-day activity.

Visitors can start from Nagano via Ogizawa Station or Toyama via Tateyama Station, and choose to finish on the other side or return to their point of origin. A series of mountain transports including trolley buses, cable cars, a ropeway, and coaches transport visitors to and from Murodo Station – which at 2540 meters is the highest station in Japan.

Open from mid-April to mid-November, the Alpine Route is most famous for its immense snow walls which, at their peak, ascend 20 meters above the road below. The walls are at their best from the opening day in April until late-June, after which outstanding hiking is available through summer and autumn, climaxing with stunning autumn colours in October until the route closes again in November.
