Nagaden operates a variety of express bus services to some of Nagano’s most popular destinations including Shiga Kogen Ski Resort and surrounding Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. On this page you will find the following information:

Express bus services operate all year round with an increase in services during winter, to cover peak season. The express bus operates to and from Bus Stop No.23 outside the East Exit of Nagano Station. Tickets are bought directly from the driver once on the bus. A one-way journey from Nagano Station to Shiga Kogen (or the reverse journey) costs: JPY2,200 to JPY2,500 per adult depending on which part of the resort you are heading to/from, and going all the way to Kusatsu Onsen would cost around JPY 4,200.

From Nagano Station, the bus just over an hour to reach the first stop in Shiga Kogen - Sun Valley - or for services that continue that far, almost two hours to reach Kusatsu Onsen. Shiga Kogen Yamanoeki (Mountain Station) is a stop on all services, making it a convenient point to disembark and board the bus while in Shiga.

The bus schedule for this upcoming season will become published a couple weeks before the season starts, but you can use the times below as a guide, knowing that certain things about the timetables may change.

Ticketing & Travel Passes

The Nagaden Snow Monkey Express Bus is a non-reserved service. You do not need to book in advance; simply line up at the bus stop and board on a first-come, first-served basis. Although there are some ways to purchase a ticket in advance, it does not guarantee a spot on the bus.

Boarding & Fare Payment (Cash, Card, and IC)

For passengers not using a travel pass, the process is simple:

  • How to Pay: Payment is made when exiting the bus at your destination.
  • Accepted Payment Methods: Cash (outside of weekends and holidays) PayPay, AliPay, Credit Cards (Visa, JCB, Amex, Mastercard), and IC Cards (Suica, PASMO).
  • One-Way Fare: Dependent on location JPY 2,200 to JPY 4,200 per adult.
  • Note: During peak winter periods, we recommend arriving at Bus Stop No. 23 at least 15–20 minutes before departure to help ensure a seat.
  • Where to Board: Bus Stop 23 outside the Eastern Exit of Nagano Station.
  • Additional Note for Weekends/Holidays:
  • Cash Tip: This bus runs as a cashless bus on weekends and holidays. If you intend to pay with cash, you cannot pay on the bus on weekends/holidays. You must buy a paper ticket at the "Aruyo" ticket office at Nagano Station East Exit beforehand.

Shiga Kogen Ski Resort: Everything You Need to Know

Located 45km east of Nagano City, Shiga Kogen is Japan’s largest and highest ski resort. In spring, it boasts Nagano’s longest ski season, often running until early May.

Do I need to book my bus seat to Shiga Kogen in advance?

No. The Nagaden Shiga Kogen Express Bus is a non-reserved service. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. During the peak winter ski season (December–March), we recommend arriving at Nagano Station East Exit Bus Stop No. 23 at least 15–20 minutes before your scheduled departure to ensure a seat.

How much does the bus to Shiga Kogen cost?

The fare depends on your final destination within the resort. A one-way journey from Nagano Station to Sun Valley or Yamanoeki costs approximately JPY 2,200 to JPY 2,500. If you are traveling all the way to Kusatsu Onsen, the fare is approximately JPY 4,200. Payment is made to the driver when you exit the bus.

Can I pay with cash on the bus?

Yes and No. On weekdays, cash is accepted directly on the bus. However, on weekends and public holidays, this service operates as a cashless bus. If you wish to pay with cash on a weekend, you must purchase a paper ticket in advance at the "Aruyo" ticket machine located at the Nagaden Bus Ticket Center (Nagano Station East Exit, 1st Floor) before boarding.

Which credit cards and IC cards are accepted?

The bus accepts touch-payment Credit Cards (Visa, JCB, Amex, Mastercard), QR payments (PayPay, AliPay), and IC Cards (Suica, PASMO). Simply tap your card or scan the code when exiting the bus.

Does the Snow Monkey Pass cover the bus to Shiga Kogen?

No. The Snow Monkey Pass is only valid for travel between Nagano Station and the Snow Monkey Park (Kanbayashi Onsen). If you are heading to Shiga Kogen, you must pay the separate express bus fare. The Snow Monkey Pass cannot be used for any portion of the journey past the Monkey Park bus stop.

Where is the best place to get off the bus in Shiga Kogen?

For most visitors, Shiga Kogen Yamanoeki (Mountain Station) is the best stop. It serves as the central hub of the resort, offers coin lockers and a rest area, and provides immediate access to the Pulse Gondola, which connects you to the central giant ski fields.

Can I bring my ski gear and luggage on the bus?

Yes. Nagaden Express buses are equipped with under-floor luggage compartments specifically designed to hold large suitcases, skis, and snowboards. There is no extra charge for stowing your gear in these compartments.

Is the bus schedule the same for Summer and Winter?

No. Nagaden operates two distinct schedules. The Winter Schedule (Dec–Apr) features high-frequency service for skiers, while the Spring/Summer/Fall Schedule (Apr–Dec) has fewer departures but includes the scenic route all the way to Kusatsu Onsen. Always check the specific dates on this page before traveling.
