Description

Begin your journey into the past, when Japan was ruled by the shogun and samurai with a drive from to Magome-juku, a beautifully preserved post town along the historic Nakasendo Trail.

kiso-magome-nakasendo

Once an important stopping point for travelers journeying between Kyoto and Edo, Magome still retains much of the atmosphere of its Edo-period atmosphere. Part of is iconic imagery is the sparkling waterways on either side of the street, and the fast-running water powers multiple waterwheels.

In order to bring the stories of this historic route to life, your guide will give a brief tour of the area while answering any questions you may have about the what the town may have been like in its prime.

Following the guided portion of the visit, enjoy some free time to explore Magome independently. Browse local shops, discover traditional crafts and souvenirs, enjoy a snack, or simply take in the atmosphere of this charming mountain town. We recommend looking for some of the wood crafts made from local trees, many of which are extremely fragrant and, just as importantly, small and easy to carry back home.

After your time in Magome, continue by private vehicle toward Komagane, leaving the historic post towns behind and entering the mountainous landscape of Nagano.

This transition is part of what makes this particular tour so special! Within a single day, you are able to go from the traditional streets and cultural history of the Nakasendo into the dramatic natural scenery of the Central Alps.

Continue your journey into the high mountains aboard the Komagatake Ropeway which was the first of it's kind when it was finished in 1967. The ropeway climbs rapidly from the valley into the Central Alps, transforming the landscape as you ascend. As you gain elevation, look out over the surrounding mountains and valleys before arriving at Senjojiki Station, high above the valley floor.

The journey itself is an experience, offering spectacular views without requiring a long or strenuous mountain ascent.

Did you know that, the Senjojiki Cirque got its name because the area covers the equivalent of 1,000 tatami mats, pronounced as "sen-jo" in Japanese!

At the top, arrive at the highest public transit hub in all of Japan, Senjojiki Station. It's here in this alpine amphitheater surrounded by the towering mountain peaks of the Central Japanese Alps where we will enjoy lunch with wonderous natural views!

One of the exciting aspects of this tour is, depending on when you visit, the scenery changes dramatically! You could come multiple times in one year and see a new landscape every single time.

For guests who wish to explore further, there are walking routes around the cirque, the most popular one taking around an hour to complete. While those who prefer a more relaxed visit can simply enjoy the scenery from the ropeway station and surrounding viewpoints.

After enjoying the alpine scenery, descend by ropeway and begin the trip back toward the location of your choosing, with an expected arrival in the early evening in either, Matsumoto at 6:10 PM or Nagoya at 7:15 PM.
