About the temple

Hozanji Temple has long been a sacred site for mountain asceticism (Shugendo), with its history dating back to the late 7th century when legendary practitioners like En no Gyoja and the monk Kukai reportedly trained among its cliffs. The temple was officially established in its modern form in 1678 by the monk Tanku, who carved a statue of the powerful deity Shoten (Kangiten), or the Buddhist equivalent of Ganesha, into the mountain's dramatic rock face. During the Edo period, Hozanji rapidly grew into a major pilgrimage destination, particularly among the merchant class of nearby Osaka, who climbed Mount Ikoma to pray for commercial success, financial prosperity, and good fortune.
