Tsukechi Gorge is a scenic mountain gorge formed around the upper reaches of the Tsukechi River. The area is especially famous for the striking colour and clarity of its water, which can appear a vivid blue as it flows through the forested valley. Often the water is clear enough to see down to the riverbed, beautifully complimenting the surrounding forest, especially during the autumn foliage season.
The gorge can be experienced by taking the well-maintained 850 metre walking path, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural scenery at a gentle pace. Rather than being a heavily developed tourist attraction, Tsukechi Gorge is more of a peaceful nature destination which can be enjoyed in every season.
One of the most distinctive features of Tsukechi Gorge is the beautiful color of the Tsukechi River. The clear blue water flowing through the gorge gives the area a tranquil atmosphere and compliments the surrounding foliage, no matter the season. On clear days, the contrast between the blue river, dark rocks, and surrounding green forest makes the gorge especially popular with photographers.
Much like the nearby Ryujin Waterfalls, the area is also known for its dramatic waterfalls. Two of the main highlights are Kannon Waterfall and Fudo Waterfall, both of which are formed by water flowing down from the surrounding mountains. In particular, the snowmelt from nearby Mt. Ontake flows into the river and feeds these waterfalls.

Best Time to Visit Tsukechi Gorge

- In spring the fresh spring foliage provides a nice contrast to the blue water of the Tsukechi River.
- Summer (June–August)
- This is our guide's favorite times to visit Tsukechi Gorge. The cooler temperature of the gorge plus the mist from the waterfalls provides a nice escape from the summer heat. This is also when the colors of the gorge are at their most vibrant.
- Autumn (October–November)
- Peak foliage season and the most popular time to visit. The gorge can get colder than many people expect in the fall, so our guides recommend bringing an extra layer (especially in late November).
- Winter (December–March)
- Our guides don't particularly recommend visiting Tsukechi Gorge in the winter, as the stairs get quite icy, making it dangerous. Plus the drive through the narrow countryside roads is not recommended when there is snow on the ground.
