Explore the contrasting histories of Wakayama on a tour that takes you from an uninhabited island fortress to a classic feudal stronghold. We begin the day by taking a ferry to Tomogashima, a cluster of quiet islands off the coast famed for their abandoned, red-brick military bunkers and overgrown nature trails. After exploring the island's unique ruins, we return to the mainland to visit Wakayama Castle. Here, you can walk the historic grounds, take in panoramic views of the city, and learn about the powerful Tokugawa shogunate that ruled the region for centuries. It is a straightforward, scenic itinerary perfect for those looking to discover a different side of Japan's coastal and wartime histories.

Join us for a full-day walking tour that blends iconic landmarks, coastal scenery, and nice train rides through the Japanese countryside. This tour starts from Nankai Namba Station(Meeting Point is near the Nankai Namba Tourist Information). Please be aware we will be walking up to 20,000 steps on uneven terrain. It is also recommended to bring a lunch as the food options on the island are extremely limited.

Highlights

  • The Ruins of Tomogashima: Explore the eerie, overgrown red-brick military bunkers and subterranean ammunition depots built during the Meiji era, which now look like a scene out of an anime film.
  • Scenic Coastal Ferry Ride: Enjoy a refreshing 20-minute boat cruise across the Kitan Strait, offering beautiful views of the Wakayama coastline and the surrounding islands.
  • Wakayama Castle Keep: Step inside the historic hilltop fortress to view authentic samurai armor and artifacts, then head to the top floor for a panoramic view of Wakayama City.
  • Nishi-no-Maru Teien Garden: Take a peaceful stroll through the castle's traditional Edo-period landscape garden, featuring a scenic pond, stone bridges, and a classic tea house.

Description

The tour starts at Nankai Namba Station. See more details about the starting location at the bottom of the page! You will have a chance to go to the bathroom, etc before leaving.

wakayama-train

Once we all meet up and are ready to go we will hop on a train to Wakayama. The ride starts in the city but gradually "fades out" into beautiful rural and coastal scenery before arriving back to the city at our destination. You will be able to stretch your legs briefly as we transfer to a short train before before arriving at the port.

The boat from there to the islands is another 20 minutes after that! The port has some interesting points and your guide will point them out as you walk through the town.

wakayama-tomogashima-ruins

Tomogashima is a cluster of four uninhabited islands off the coast of Wakayama, accessible via a short ferry ride from Kada Port. The main island, Oshima, is famous for its abandoned Meiji-era military forts, red-brick ammunition depots, and overgrown tunnels that have slowly been reclaimed by nature. Because of its atmospheric, mysterious vibe, it has become a popular destination for hikers and photographers who often compare the ruins to the floating island in Studio Ghibli's Castle in the Sky.

We will walk around the island seeing some of these sites and also great views of the sea and islands around. While on the island there will be some time for a picnic lunch. After hopping back on the ferry and another train back to Wakayama City.

wakayama-castle

The next stop is Wakayama Castle, a striking hilltop fortress originally built in 1585 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later ruled by the powerful Tokugawa clan. Visitors can climb to the top of the white three-story castle keep to explore an extensive collection of authentic samurai weapons and armor while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding city. The expansive castle grounds also feature the beautiful Nishi-no-Maru Teien, a traditional Edo-period landscape garden known for its scenic pond and peaceful walking paths.

After a full day of exploring coastal ruins and historic castle grounds, it is time to head back. We will board the train together and make our way back toward Osaka, arriving at Namba Station. Feel free to use the journey to chat with your guide about the day’s adventures, or simply close your eyes and relax on the smooth ride home!

Once you return back to the station the tour is finished. A day full of history, beauty and travel concludes back in Osaka where you can eat and drink and enjoy the best of what Osaka has to offer!
