Tucked deep in the Kiso mountains in southern Nagano, Hirugami Onsen offers a spring experience that is sure to amaze travelers looking to get off the beaten path. Each spring, thousands of peach trees bloom across the area in shades of red, white, and pink, creating one of the largest and most concentrated displays of peach blossoms (hanamomo) in the country.

The blooms typically appear from mid-April to early May, slightly later than cherry blossoms, making this a good option for travelers who miss the sakura season. The surrounding area, including riverbanks, village streets, and nearby mountain roads, offers multiple viewing points, while the onsen town itself provides a convenient and relaxing base for exploring the region.

A Brief History of Hanamomo in Achi Village

The story of how the valley surrounding Hirugami Onsen became filled with hanamomo actually begins in Germany. In 1922, the Japanese businessman and "The King of Electrical Power," Momosuke Fukuzawa, encountered a striking three-colored peach tree in Munich, Germany while on a business trip. Captivated by its beauty, and the poetic coincidence of his name (“momo” meaning “peach” in Japanese) he brought saplings back to Japan, planting them in Nagano’s Kiso Valley where he was building his hydroelectric power plants.

From there, the trees spread. Local residents nurtured them, shared them, and gradually lined roads and villages with the peach blossom trees. By the early 2000s, Hirugami Onsen became known as “Japan’s Number One Peach Blossom Paradise.” Today, over 10,000 trees bloom across the area, supported by local initiatives and celebrated annually through the Flowering Peach Festival, which draws over 200,000 visitors.

Best Peach Blossom Viewing Spots Around Hirugami Onsen

There are several locations to see the peach blossoms in and around Hirugami Onsen. In this section, we will explain what to expect in each location as well as when to expect the best blooms.

Hirugami Onsen Village

Best Time to Visit: Early April to Mid-April

Within the onsen town itself, around 200 peach trees line the banks of the Achi River. There is a path along the river offering beautiful views of the blooms. We recommend renting a yukata and strolling through the town and relaxing by soaking your feet in the foot bath.

Tsukikawa Onsenkyo: Hanamomo no Sato

Best Time to Visit: Mid-April to Late April

Often called Japan’s most spectacular peach blossom destination, Hanamomo no Sato is where the full scale of the region’s beauty comes into focus. Around 5,000 trees bloom each spring creating a landscape that is unmatched in its color and density.

Hanamomo Kaido: The Peach Blossom Highway

Blooming Season: Early April to Late April

Running for approximately 40 kilometers along National Route 256, the Hanamomo Kaido is one of Japan’s most scenic spring drives.

Soaking in Hirugami Onsen’s “Beauty Waters”

After a day among the blossoms, there’s no better way to unwind than in the mineral-rich waters of Hirugami Onsen.

Discovered only in 1973, this relatively young hot spring has quickly earned a reputation as one of Japan’s finest “beauty baths.” Its alkaline simple sulfur waters, with a pH of 9.7, are known for leaving skin exceptionally smooth, earning it the nickname bijin no yu, or “beauty spring.”

Many ryokan baths open toward the surrounding mountains, allowing you to soak while taking in the soft colors of spring, or, later in the evening, the remarkably clear night skies that Achi Village is famous for.

When to Visit & Travel Tips

Typical Bloom Period: Mid-April to Early May

  • Hirugami Onsen Village: Early–Mid April
  • Hanamomo Kaido: Early–Late April
  • Hanamomo no Sato: Mid–Late April

Unlike cherry blossoms, hanamomo bloom over a longer period and with more variation in color, making timing slightly more forgiving.

Important Travel Tip:
Parking in Hirugami Onsen is extremely limited (around 100 spaces). If you want to fully enjoy the blossoms, especially in the early morning or evening light, staying overnight or traveling with a tour is highly recommended.

Staying overnight also allows you to experience one of the area’s greatest hidden treasures: its night sky. Achi Village is often called the home of Japan’s most beautiful stars, and after the daytime colors fade, the sky reveals another kind of spectacle entirely.
