The Takedao abandoned railway trail offers a nostalgic journey through the Mukogawa Gorge, where hikers can walk directly along old tracks and cross iron bridges suspended over the rushing river. The route is defined by its series of dark, rugged tunnels that create a thrilling atmosphere, especially when the surrounding forest transforms with vibrant autumn colors or spring blossoms.
Where is the Takedao Abandoned Railway?

The trail follows a decommissioned section of the JR Fukuchiyama Line located along the Mukogawa River gorge in southeastern Hyogo Prefecture. It is easily accessible from Takedao Station, stretching through a scenic mountain valley that bridges the cities of Takarazuka and Nishinomiya.
A Brief History

The former Takedao abandoned railway was originally a vital segment of the JR Fukuchiyama Line, constructed in 1899 to connect Osaka with the northern regions of Hyogo Prefecture. This specific riverside section was decommissioned in 1986 when the line was rerouted through more modern, efficient tunnels to accommodate faster train travel. Following its closure, the scenic route was preserved as a public hiking trail, allowing visitors to walk through the original brick-lined tunnels and across the historic iron bridges that once supported steam locomotives.
