March marks the transition from deep winter to early spring across Hokkaido. Snow still covers much of the island especially in central and northern regions. The worst of the cold begins to ease. Days grow noticeably longer, ski resorts stay in excellent condition through mid-March, and late-winter events offer quieter, more relaxed experiences than the February festival rush.

March is also one of Hokkaido’s most interesting “dual-season” months:
You can feel true winter in the mountains, early spring warmth in the south, and a subtle shift in local cuisine and culture as fresher ingredients begin to appear.

Imagine, if you will:
• Skiing spring powder with warmer temperatures, softer sunlight, and fewer crowds.
• Walking Sapporo’s parks as snow begins to melt, revealing the first hints of greenery.
• Experiencing the last drift ice of the season on the eastern coast.
• Relaxing in outdoor onsen under mild March snow or mist.
• Enjoying winter flavors — crab, ramen, hot pots — blended with early spring dishes like fresh seafood and seasonal sweets.

This “What to Know” guide brings together everything you need to make the most of Hokkaido in March, a peaceful, milder alternative to the intensity of February. Festivals & Events in March

March offers fewer major festivals than February, but the atmosphere is calmer, more local, and more relaxed, with late-winter activities still in full swing.

Sapporo White Illumination (late November to mid-March)

The Sapporo White Illumination is a major winter event in Sapporo, the prefectural capital of Hokkaido. Known for its extensive light displays in Odori Park, this Illumination event features millions of LED lights that create intricate designs and sights! Held from November 21st to March 14th, the final two weeks of this popular winter light show continue through the first half of March, offering beautiful nighttime scenery without the February crowds. Snow levels are lower, but lights are striking against the still-cold March air. Most of the illumination appears along Ekimae Dori (running from Sapporo Stn to Susukino Stn and along parts of Odori Park).

Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo (late November to mid-March)

Hokkaido-Sapporo-Munich-Christmas-Market

Coinciding with the Sapporo White Illumination, the Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo is also held in Odori Park all winter. This charming market is a sister event to the famous Christmas markets of Germany and brings the festive spirit of Bavaria to the heart of Sapporo. This year the Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo will be held from November 21st to March 14th. The various stalls—built in a German half-timber style—offer handcrafted and event-limited goods, traditional German foods and drinks (including mulled wine!), and of course great photo opportunities in the magical atmosphere of dazzling lights and fresh snow.

Drift Ice Season in Shiretoko & Abashiri (late January to mid-March)

Tips for Visiting & Travel in March

Getting to Hokkaido

Many visitors to Hokkaido may first find themselves flying into New Chitose Airport. From there, there are many convenient buses and trains which can take you directly to Sapporo Station, in the heart of the City of Sapporo, the prefectural capital of Hokkaido. Or, if you're already in Japan and you're more interested in southern Hokkaido, you can always take the Hokkaido Shinkansen bullet train into Hakodate. This shinkansen departs from Tokyo but makes a convenient stop at Shin-Aomori Station before leaving the main island of Honshu and then going underwater to cross the Tsugaru Strait to take you to Hokkaido.

What to Wear in March

March is milder than February but still calls for winter clothing:
• Winter coat (lighter is fine after mid-month)
• Thermal base layers
• Warm hat, scarf, gloves
• Waterproof boots—important for slushy sidewalks! High boots recommended.
• Umbrella or compact rain shell late March (snow/rain mix possible)

Transportation

• JR trains operate normally. Delays decrease compared to February
• Road conditions improve but still icy early mornings and evenings
• Winter driving still not recommended for non-experts, especially in northern and eastern Hokkaido
• Airport transport smooth; fewer weather disruptions
Crowds are much lighter:
• March is one of the easiest months for travel convenience
• Trains, buses, and taxis less congested

Accommodation

Unlike February, March is easier for booking, though popular places still fill quickly during spring-break periods.
• Sapporo hotels remain affordable and available
• Ski resorts (Niseko / Furano / Rusutsu) still book heavily through early March
• Jozankei and Noboribetsu ryokans more available than January-February
• Tattoo policy awareness still important for public baths. Please confirm policy before booking

Miscellaneous Tips

• IC cards ideal for travel (Suica, Kitaca, Sapica, etc.)
• Phone batteries last longer than in February
• Slush-proof footwear is crucial in Sapporo
• Snowmelt = puddles, icy patches, and wet pants. Waterproof boots help immensely

Timing Your Visit

March in Hokkaido is a "shoulder season," offering lower prices and thinner crowds while still providing opportunities such as drift ice sightings in the first half of the month. As temperatures rise at the end of the month, expect a transition from winter to "slush season," making waterproof footwear more important than a heavy jacket. It’s a great time for travelers who want the winter aesthetic without the sub-zero bite!
