The Best Time to Visit Matsumoto

matsumoto-castle-winter

Matsumoto is a city that can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. Spring (April to early May) is one of the most popular times to visit, when Matsumoto Castle is surrounded by cherry blossoms and the weather is mild. Summer brings lively festivals such as Matsumoto Bon Bon, and access to nearby mountain escapes, though temperatures can be hot, so light, breathable clothing is recommended. Autumn (late September to November) is ideal for crisp weather and stunning fall foliage, making it a favorite for photographers and walkers alike — a light jacket is useful for cool evenings. Winter showcases the castle against a backdrop of snow and offers easy access to Nagano’s ski resorts; warm layers, a good coat, and sturdy footwear are essential. No matter the season, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended to fully enjoy Matsumoto’s historic streets and cultural sites.
