Seasonal Highlights in October

Easy but Rewarding Hiking Trails

Many of Kamikochi’s walking routes are accessible even for beginners, including the flat riverside path between Kappabashi Bridge and Myojin Bridge. For more experienced hikers, the trails to Mt. Yake or the Tashiro Pond loop provide moderate to challenging terrain with rewarding panoramic views. Our recommendation is to get out at Taisho-ike Pond and walk from there to Kappabashi Bridge to enjoy great views of the Hotaka Mountains the whole way. In October, you will have chances throughout the month to enjoy various fall colors.

Kappa Bridge and the Best View in the Park

Just a short walk from the Kamikochi Bus Terminal, Kappa Bridge is the valley’s iconic landmark. October’s vibrant foliage creates picture-perfect scenes, and the surrounding trails allow for easy short walks along the Azusa River, suitable for photography and casual sightseeing. Expect possible snow on the peaks from early in the month for an especially dramatic scenery.

Fall Colors at Taisho Pond

Kamikochi

This tranquil pond reflects the surrounding mountains and colorful forests, especially stunning in early morning light or after light rain. A walk around Taisho Pond is leisurely and suitable for all ages, offering a peaceful way to enjoy the autumn scenery. Starting from here, it is 3.6 km to reach Kappabashi Bridge, a walk which can be done in around 1.5 hours at an easy pace.

  • Unusually Warm Weather This Year - The weather forecast for the early autumn period this year is showing warmer than averages temperatures - this may mean that the fall colors are slightly delayed, so plan accordingly.
  • Trail Conditions - Paths are well-maintained but can be slippery from fallen leaves. Proper footwear is advised. Trails like the riverside loop are beginner-friendly, while routes to Mt. Yake or Tokusawa are moderate in difficulty. Early starts are recommended to make the most of daylight.

Where to Stay in October
