Hokkaido-Blue-Pond

The Blue Pond or Aoi-ike (青い池) is in Biei, Hokkaido—specifically, located in Shirogane, Biei‑cho, Kamikawa District. This area is “smack dab” in the center of Hokkaido. The map at the very bottom of this page indicates the approximate location of Biei and the Shirogane Blue Pond.

The Blue Pond is a strikingly beautiful man-made pond, known for its vibrant blue color and mysterious atmosphere. Despite its natural appearance, the pond has a relatively recent and purposeful origin.

Did you know that The Blue Pond was unintentionally created as part of an erosion control system built after the 1988 eruption of Mount Tokachi (十勝岳)? To prevent volcanic mudflows from damaging nearby towns like Biei, a series of dams and diversion structures were installed along the Biei River. One of these structures caused water to accumulate in a basin, creating the pond. Over time, aluminum-rich volcanic minerals from the Tokachi area mixed with the water, leading to the pond’s unique blue coloration. And there you have it. Now you know the reason for the pond’s unique blue surface coloring.

Though the pond was originally an engineering byproduct, it remained largely unknown until a photograph taken by local photographer was used as a default wallpaper by Apple in OS X Mountain Lion in 2012. This catapulted the Blue Pond into international fame.

Upon first glance of The Blue Pond, one notices a few strikingly visual characteristics.

  • The surreal blue hue on the surface of the water caused by the colloidal particles of aluminum hydroxide, which reflect blue light.
  • Dead larch and birch trees remain standing in the pond, adding to its ethereal, almost otherworldly look.
  • The pond’s color changes subtly depending on the weather, season, and time of day, ranging from cobalt blue to emerald green.

The best times to visit The Blue Pond would be the two time frames of:

  • July-August: the pond is consistently vivid blue under sunny skies.
    • Offers beautiful clear reflections off the water in the early mornings.
    • Best season for flower lovers and vibrant photography for photographers.
  • September-October: Striking contrast of blue water and golden-red foliage.
