Fukuyama Castle was one of the greatest castles of western Japan during the Edo period. It possesses a sizable five-tiered main keep which now serves as a museum in which visitors can learn about the history of the city. This castle keep is the only one in Japan which is protected by iron-plates on its outside walls, giving it a unique appearance which can’t be found anywhere else in the country.
The museum inside the castle is very detailed and entertaining for both children and adults. While there is a decent amount of written information, there are also animated videos and interactive “challenges” which appeal to younger visitors. Entry to the museum costs JPY500 for adults and is free for high school students and younger. Below you can find additional information about the castle’s location, its history, and more.
Where is Fukuyama Castle?
The castle is located in the city of Fukuyama in Hiroshima Prefecture. It is right next to the JR Fukuyama Station, a stop on the San’yo Shinkansen line. These two facts make it a fantastic place to stop by for a short visit when traveling between Hiroshima and Osaka.
History and Construction of the Castle

Construction of Fukuyama Castle began in 1619 and was completed in 1622. It was built by Mizuno Katsunari, the cousin of one of Japan’s three great unifiers, Tokugawa Ieyasu. At the time it was constructed, the chaotic “warring states” period had just come to an end, thus tensions were still high. The newly established shogunate, the military government of Japan, was looking for ways to demonstrate its authority and deter future conflict.
Thus, the castle was constructed with an impressive size and layout with the express purpose of intimidating the feudal lords of western Japan who might have been considering rebelling against the shogun. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the imposing Fukyuma Castle had a great impact on the history of the western region.
Unfortunately, the castle that we see today is not the original one from the 17th century. The original structure was sadly destroyed by air raids in 1945, and the current castle keep was rebuilt in 1966. An additional renovation took place in 2022 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the castle.
