Located approximately 45km (1 hour drive) to the east of Nagano City and 280km (~5 hours drive) to the northwest of Tokyo, Shiga Kogen is not only Japan's largest ski resort with over 600 hectares of terrain, but also home to the famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park with its hot spring-loving macaque monkeys!

Where is Shiga Kogen?
Shiga Kogen is a vast mountainous area in the north of Nagano Prefecture, which includes the Shiga Kogen Ski Resort, and is also a UNESCO biosphere that is part of the larger Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. It sits 45km (1 hour drive) to the east of Nagano City and 280km (<5 hours drive) to the northwest of Tokyo. Shiga Kogen is famous not only for its ski slopes, but also for its unique and diverse wildlife, beautiful hiking trails, and for having the "highest road in Japan" as part of the scenic Shiga Kusatsu Kogen route (aka Nationlal Route 292). Shiga Kogen also contains Mt. Yakebitai, the mountain that the snow monkeys are famous for living on, as well as the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park.

Public Transportation to Shiga Kogen
The fastest way to get to Shiga Kogen from Tokyo is to take the Shinkansen (or "bullet train"). The bullet train line that connects Tokyo to Nagano is called the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, and the closest station on this line to Shiga Kogen is Nagano Station. You can take the any of the Kagayaki, Hakutaka, or Asami services on the Hokuriku Shinkansen to get to Nagano Station.
You can get on this train from either Tokyo Station, Ueno Station, or Omiya Station. From Tokyo Station, for example, the train takes between 90 to 110 minutes (depending on which train line you take) to reach Nagano Station and costs between ¥8,000 and ¥12,000 one way. You can book these Shinkansen tickets online through websites such as Japan Travel by NAVITIME, or directly from the ticket counter in the train station. From Nagano Station, you can take either a bus or train to get to Shiga Kogen. The bus is a more direct option because it will take you directly to Shiga Kogen, while the train will take you to nearby Yudanaka Station. Because of this, we recommend the bus option to Shiga Kogen.
Bus from Nagano Station to Shiga Kogen
Exit from Nagano station’s East Exit and descend to the ground floor bus terminal, then take the Nagaden Express Bus towards Shiga Kogen. The bus departs from Bus Stop 23, and takes 70 minutes to reach the Shiga Kogen Yamanoeki Bus Station (the main stop for the ski resort) and 90 minutes to reach Okushiga (the most distant area of the resort). The bus costs ¥1,800~¥2,300 per person depending on where you get off, and tickets are bought on the bus - directly from the driver with no reservation required - with numerous services each day during winter.

Train from Nagano Station to Shiga Kogen
From Nagano Station, take the limited express train on the Nagano Dentetsu Line to Yudanaka Station. This train takes about 50 minutes and costs ¥1,290 per person. To reach the train, exit Nagano station via the Zenkoji Exit and take the escalator heading underground (to your right) to the Nagano Dentetsu Line. Once at Yudanaka Station, there are two local buses services operating from outside the station to different areas of the resort. While this can seem a little confusing, the journey is easily navigable. The Shiga Kogen Line heads to Shiga Kogen with its final destination being Hotaru Onsen (Suzurikawa), while the Shiga Kogen Express Line also services Shiga Kogen but goes ever further, all the way to Okushiga Kogen Hotel.
For example, if you are staying in Ichinose, Prince Hotel, or Okushiga areas, you need to take the Shiga Kogen Express Line bus bound for Okushiga and disembark at the bus stop named after area you are heading for i.e. Ichinose, Prince Hotel West/South/East, Okushiga Kogen Hotel, etc. Alternatively, if you are headed to the Yokoteyama area, take the Shiga Kogen Line bus bound for Hotaru Onsen (Suzurikawa) and get off the bus at Hotaru Onsen or Kumanoyu.
